eCommerce Website Advice - Subdomain or New Website for SEO?

When setting up an eCommerce website do you prefer to use a subdomain or a new website to get the most bang in terms of SEO.

For example if I have an existing website called Widgets.com and now I want to create an eCommerce website to sell the widgets, would it be preferable to create shop.Widgets.com or BuyMyWidgets.com

From everything I read, it seems to be better for SEO to use a subdomain vs creating a new Website. I read somewhere that Google said they basically treat a subdomain basically as a separate site.

What are your thoughts?

Although sub-domains are considered as separate site in the eyes of search engines. But still building a new site and doing the same things allover its not a wise choice.

I will say that you create a fine sub-domain and put your eCommerce products in it. You can also link back to your sub-domain from the homepage of your root directory in this way you will see it will only increase your sales.
