Do I put Blog on existing domain or a new domain?

As one initiative, I'm searching for the best possible SEO and traffic I can get by creating a Blog. I have two differing thoughts on advantages of putting a Blog 1) on an existing domain, or 2) a new domain.

Putting a new Blog on the existing domain would 1) increase unique content on the site, 2) increase traffic to the main domain, 3) increase page rank and other good things for the existing domain, if done right.

Putting the new Blog on a new domain and (to drive traffic) linking back to the main site would help for 1) adding backlinks (from a separate IP address), and 2) occupy more spots on search engines.

If increasing traffic to the main site is my main goal, which domain should the Blog be installed on? New domain or the main money domain. What are the pros and cons?

    Hi Mark,

My personal preference would be to go with the bolg on the old domain.
It would, as you say, give new content, etc etc etc.

Having the blog on a new domain would give you back links, but from only 1 IP address. Most of these links would eventually be de-valued by google as they all come from the same domain/IP address.

I don't know if this is official or not, but Google only really gives 2 places in the SERPs to a any particular domain, so no matter how many post you have for a particular keyword, its only ever going to occupy 2 spots in the SERPs (for that keyword search)

So, in my opinion, I think having the blog on the old domain would out-weight any benefits of having the new domain..

    Hope this helps

    Bruce

      Bruce,

Thanks for the comments. I agree with your points.

My thinking is that domain A (old site) and Domain B (Blog) could both get ranked for the same keywords, therefor locking up two, top-10 spots on Google for a particular keyword.

This is similar to what I do with Squidoo, Articles, videos, etc. I've managed to get 7 out of the top-10 spots all pointing to properties I control.

Locking up multiple spots on Google for a particular keyword is more valuable for me than the backlinks in this case.

So, I'm still torn a bit. Thanks again.
