Google Analytics Only Tracking Some Traffic Despite No Filters

Any insights on this would be greatly appreciated.

I began noticing there was an issue when I created a goal URL as being a special URL on my site which visitors can only get to if they confirm their subscription to my mailing list.

I was getting confirmed subscriptions which had to have gone to that special URL... but no visits were showing up on that URL. I have one or two visits there over the last month but I know for a fact there have been a lot more visits in the last 30 days.

I can't even see my own real time visits to my website even with no filters applied.

After some observing, I've found that Google Analytics is showing SOME of the traffic which comes to my site, but obviously not all of it.

In in the real time visit section I just saw someone visit a page of my site. I then tried going to that same page and no visit was reported.

I checked to ensure that tracking is enabled across the entire site (which obviously it is otherwise I'd be seeing zero traffic, but I am still indeed getting some traffic) and it's good. I'm using Monster Insights Plugin for WordPress as it's a WordPress run site.

Has anyone had an inexplicable instance where some traffic was being reported by Google Analytics, but not all traffic?

  • Some browsers have privacy enabled, they don't allow cookies or javascript, for example.
  • I can't really guess what's going on there, and am not familiar with the plugin you are using, but you do need to make double-sure your Analytics code is actually showing on that page. Go to the page and do View Source in your browser and find the code

    or whatever form of the Analytics snippet you have to make sure it is actually on the page.

    However, if just SOME visits are showing, hmm, well again, are all visitors (including mobile) seeing a page template which has the Analytics code in the header? I mean, there's not maybe a mobile version of the header.php file that doesn't have the code in, something weird like that? Also you should know that most ad-blockers are blocking GA these days, which is also a pain in the butt.

    If you want to be really sure about site visits and your traffic is not huge you could install a PHP-based statistics package like BBClone. Then you can see every visitor to every page, there is no way for that to be blocked.

    PHP stats programs are not great for high-traffic sites as they slow down your server and can slow down page load times, but for a small sales site they are great, you can instantly see who has been to your site, which pages, where they came from etc.
  • 1 Google tracking code can track all of your website pages visits so this will depend on how you will use GA to filter and custom the report that you want to show. This will require well experienced individual or people to help you.

  • Maybe it's set to trace unique ip so it counts a repeated visit...

    BUT...why double opt in? I mean, in IM niche and in most of the niche, i consider quite absurd that people have to confirm that they want to be subscribed after they put their email.

    If it's for fake emails, there are tools for list hygyene which are better.

    Or you can set up an automation to filter contact which are not involved.

    Moreover, you can track everything from your autoresponder, so you can easily find how much % of the subscribers you loose with double opt in, and set up an automation for people who do not confirm to see if they are alive.
