Going after a specific competitor

If I have a specific competitor that I know is wildly successful with their PPC campaigns, aren't there sites like keycompete etc. I can use to essentially copy their campaigns? What's the catch here? Or more importantly, how do I go about this the right way?

Organically, look at their backlinks and try to get better links (more relevant, higher PR), and then look at what niches they are focusing on my looking at their title tags and their KWs (using a KW density tool). Then try to do 10% more.

I'm kinda screwed organically, because this is an affiliate site for which I have little to no control over the HTML. I guess I could still build backlinks etc., but I can't support it with any on-page SEO. That's why I was concentrating solely on their (and my) PPC efforts.

Also, I'm wondering if I can somehow use the "going after a competitor" approach as a starting point. Rather than go through and build keyword lists on my own etc., is it feasible and smart to simply spy on my main competitor and pursue the same keywords, maybe trying to improve on ad copy? Or am I being too simplistic?
