not sure if this post belongs to this section but hopefully someone can give me some guidance

ive inherited a site that has over 200 pages - many of which but not all are duplicates with slight changes to reflect the town it was targeting. obviously this does not make sense these days so is my best plan to

i) delete all of these pages?
ii) perhaps retain those that have had some success over the years (and what else could i do if i were to retain some of these pages?)

    Lots of questions:
    Are the pages useful?
    Do they rank?
    Do they get traffic?
What are the search volume for the keywords?
Are they optimized for url, title and metadescriptions?
Whatever you do, you have to get rid of duplicate content - it can potentially ruin the whole site. Use siteliner for this.

What does volume of traffic have to do with anything? Just curious why this would be a consideration.

Duplicate content within a site is not "Bad". I don't understand this logic. You do understand that every Amazon Affiliate on EVERY PAGE is supposed to have:

" [Insert your name] is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to [insert the applicable site name] "

And this is EVERY affiliate site on the net... THATS duplicate content at an extreme... and does it effect ranking?

Google said at some point - hey we dont want duplicate content... I get it... but what they were saying is people were placing the same article for and Apple iPhone 8 thousand times and it makes no sense. They are not saying that you explicitly can not use duplicate content. actually they are not even saying you cant do anything... across domains it may not rank.. but RARELY if ever, that I can think of has duplicate content within a domain - had any kinds of difficulty ranking.

What are you going to do to improve the overall ranking of the pages that you are planning to retain?

Search engine optimize the pages that are not doing so well and make them unique to each town.

Everything can and should be improved upon over time.

Says who? It makes perfect sense actually... this exact same tactic is used all of the time. Look at how the pages are ranking... I can imagine there are some duds, but they all wont be.

This is a strategy I use often... it works. So its not my words here is what a fellow Warrior has to say about the subject: ( https://incomebully.com/seo-in-the-b...-small-cities/ )

Data will never fail you... look at the data to make decisions like this. It doesn't matter what you think makes sense... how are they performing?

    Hope that Helps!

You can also re purpose the content and make them fresh once more.
