Do I really need backlinks?

If you have a popular site with loads of traffic sources that is earning good money...nah, you don't need backlinks.


People try to fake backlinks, game backlinks - they work far too hard for poor results. You've been around a while - you know this stuff.



A backlink is, simply, a PATH leading to YOUR site. Instead of finding your site only by looking for THAT site...visitors come through links on other sites. Googlebots notice you are creating a 'map of links' leading to your site and if the links are good ones (from active sites in related niches)...google rewards you by increasing visibility of your site.

In my experience, good quality content is not enough. You gotta have some backlinks one way or another. I never had this experience where I would rank for good keywords with a fair amount of search volume without any backlinks.

For long-tail keywords with very little to no search volume, you might rank.

1) Yes you absolutely NEED backlinks to rank in Google Search, or Bing Search for htat matter. That is non-negotiable, they have been the strongest ranking factor for almost 2 decades now, and will continue to be for the forseeable future.

As far as getting backlniks being "impossible" - NOT EVEN CLOSE - Granted they're not a complete no-brainer as they were before, where any third world peasant (e.g. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, Phillipines, etc) with access to the internet could randomly post 10,000,000 gibberish non-sensical blog comments or forum posts with the spelling grammar and sentence structure so poor that you can pretty much read the foreign accent. That was pre-2007...

Gone are the days where automated programs that any Belarusian bunmblehead (or Russian) could execute a software spamming out 100,000,000 Web 2.0 Blogs, Profile links, Directory links, Wikis etc in no time and quikcly rank a crap site (some of those worked well up till 2017/2018)...

Nowdays, gaining backlinks actually requires intelligence, creativity, and a strong command of the language you are targeting. If you intend to rank in any english speaking market, you'd better be a native english speaker with a strong command of the English language and proper spelling and grammar.

So, I suppose if you're a complete moron, need "step by step instruction" on how to do (anything for that matter) and are incapable of coming up with your own ideas and solutions, are completely reliant on spun content and article generators (which don't work for SEO anymore and NEVER worked for quality content), are not a native English speaker, and can't afford to hire one - I suppose it WOULD be impossible for you to get backlinks in any English speaking market.

For the rest of us who have a brain and (IF targeting US/UK/AU/CA/NZ/ZA/BZ) are a native English speaker with a basic understanding of grammar, sentence structure, word usage and spelling - It's acutally quite easy to build backlinks. For any niche.

The "Google Dance" continues. But it has absolutely NOTHING to do with backlinks. And it's definitely not an either/or thing. They BOTH have always been in existence, not having anything to do with one another (nor do they even topically overlap).
