Year Old Website with Good Amount of Content is losing in the SERPs

I have a domain that is about 14 months old and the articles on them is between 7 to 10 months old. The articles range between 700 to 3,100 words each. There are no duplicates. I have my main kw phrase in the title tag and it appears once in the first para. I write for humans (not machine) and from what I think, are pretty good articles. My articles are written from my own personal experiences.

I was ranking pretty good - from positions 20 to 50 - and I considered this ok since my articles were fairly young.

However, overtime, my articles started losing in the rankings without me doing anything. I would admit after putting up at least 30 articles, I started slowing down a little and perhaps that's why I started losing my rankings. But I'm not sure.

My blog is about personal finance and when I started it, I was concerned that I would be in a flooded niche - but believe me - there are a lot of sub-niches in where I was trying to rank in. Additionally, I was ranking ok when I started the blog.

I would put a link to my blog here - but not sure if the moderators would allow that. Just wondering if someone may have had similar experience with a year old blog where they couldn't rank after a year.

thx much.

Just publishing content is not enough to rank well.

The #1 ranking factor is still links. If you are not building or acquiring them, I would expect rankings to fall.

The entire thing you wrote about you content, content length, their age is just one side of the coin. If you want to rank then you have to cover both sides of the coin.

And other side is your link profile. @MikeFriedman pointed it correctly.

So, what have you done link wise?

Absolutely nothing. I have posted it on social media - but been unsuccessful there as well. And on one account, I have 35,000 followers on Twitter (it was an old political account). I just can't get ppl to go to my site.

However, no link building. I though backlinks were basically old fashioned - to tell you the truth, spammy. I wanted this to be 100% white hat. But looks like I have to start building links.

If your site is 14 months old, ranking 20 or higher, is not good.

With proper SEO, for a lot of terms, you can be #1-3 within days.

You seem to have bought into the content is king crap.

If you want to make money, you create one piece of content and drive traffic to it. (Depending on what you are into, you may need supporting content.).

When that piece of content gets as high as you can get it, you get your attention started on another one.

        Your options are
        SEO
        social media marketing
        paid ads
        forums.

Whatever option you choose, go full in.

Right now, you're spending a lot of effort without a plan... or the right plan.

Your onpage SEO is not as good as it can be. Your offpage SEO is not existent. Take a look at things like:
        the skyscraper technique (backlinko.com)
        SILO structures for SEO.

And give up the crap about white hat. There is no such thing. White hat SEO means you allow complete strangers to determine whether you make money or not. (Hint: complete strangers do not care if you do.)

White hat means you are forever on page 2 or worse. #1 in SERPs gets some 30% of the traffic; #2 gets 12%, #3 get 8, by the time you're at 10, 98% of the traffic for the keyword has been accounted for.

You want to make money, you need to be on page 1. To make good money, you need to be #1-3, depending on keyword.

If you choose social media, in the war room forum here, look for Addams' free guide to make money with youtube in the warroom forum here (Tom's Newbie Guide Issue #1 : PPL Money - [2017] [AUG] [Content]). It will take you far. (You have to be a warroom member to see it.)

It is a bit dated and covers only youtube, but what he says applies to other media and it will teach you how to write for humans so that humans will want to share your content.

Right, you cannot play "good guy" game when it comes to your biggest enemy Google.

And even that couldn't work these days because of how Algo is working against you.

Even thou I have my reservations about your total post given how I see present
SEO in lights of how G.has been fighting established SEO rules which should
nicely work under past white hat conditions, I totally agreed with black hat as
the only alternative left in small window before G. abandon use of Algo and moves
          to root based crawling.

          my 2 cents

The truth is that everybody every now and then does something that can be stated as 'Black hat'.

Actually it's nonsense. Spread by a bunch of individuals who actually have no knowledge about SEO or internet marketing at all. Or, they are peddling their own propaganda.

Google talks about quality. But have you seen what Google SERP's are producing lately?!!

  • It's quite bad to see that the year-old website with a better amount of content is losing in the SERPs (Search engine results pages). So following are some major issues that will affect your website ranking.

    1. Manual or Algorithmic Penalty Rank Drop
It is habitually a big fall in search engine rankings, which happens over-night. If you notice that your site falls more than 10-30 positions on a multitude of keywords, this could signify a penalty.

    2. OutRanked by Competitor
It is usually a slight drop in ranking. You will see your competitors' site that outranked you and the other sites will normally be in equal positions as before.

    3. On-page Issues
This is either a big drop or your site can not progress in rankings. It may be a sign of anxiety when your rankings start to slowly fall behind other sites, even though you're sincerely trying your best to create content and building links.

    4. Losing Links
This is either a small or big drop. You will see huge stalks in link velocity, as you'll have a lot of inbound links disappearing from your link profile.

    5. Google Updated Algorithm
This is either a slight or big drop, you might be scratched a little or you might be in serious trouble. In both cases, you might suspect an update if you're rankings are quickly and immediately dropping.

Look at it this way.. your blog content is 7 to 10 months old on a 14month old domain. Be advised that articles are not the only "content" the search engines rank. The end result is you have a 10 month old blog that is being ranked.

Not good enough as far as Google is concerned. First, Google is on record that word count is at best an insignificant ranking factor, Google may change your keyword in the SERPs, what you 'think' is pretty good articles may not be what Google thinks of your articles.

What do you mean by positions rankings = 20 to 50? What counts is if your article is on page 1 in the SERPs.
One of your problems is you did nothing when your competitors were more than likely doing something to outrank sites like yours.

    Irrelevant information.
