Shorter or longer domain?

Question for those with the knowledge lol. I hope I'm posting in the right section.

I have two domains. One domain which is seven letters and is what I'm currently using for the website's url. The actual websites name is classic cartoons Chat which I also own the same exact domain. Do I stick with the shorter domain or use the longer one? I read the shorter the better for ranking and seo? The longer one like I wrote is exactly what the website is. This niche isn't my field. What do you suggest? The link is in my signature. Thanks!

From a user end point, shorter domains = less typing needed.

  • The domain length has nothing to do with SEO. Pick whatever will be easier to remember.
    • [ 4 ] Thanks
  • The longer one I believe is easier to remember than the shorter one.

    • Not necessarily true ...

      hxqgvz.com is short.

widgetswidgetswidgets.com is much easier to remember.

  • the shorter domain is best if you like to grow like a brand.
Quite easy for the the remembrance of people. And also has effect on seo.

    • wrong, Wrong, WRONG!!!!

The length of a domain name has absolutely NOTHING to do with SEO. It also has ZERO to do with user experience!

Where do you people come up with this stuff?
  • The length does not directly affect your SEO.
But it certainly affects the user experience, and user experience is an important factor in SEO.

The domain must be easy to remember and spell for your visitors.
The ideal length of a domain name is between 15 to 17 characters.

google boolean url vs shortened url and you should find good intel on which method words best for SEO and marketing/branding purposes. Thanks for the post and good luck.
  • i think it won't really affect seo. Try to think of what is better for the user
  • The domain length is about 12 to 14 characters. For SEO point of view; words in the domain defines the its importance.

  • Length of your domain name has absolutely NO bearing on rankings.
As mentioned above... it's what easier for people to remember.
  • shorter domain is more preferable.

  • Two separate things - SEO-wise, the URL length is irrelevant.

Marketing/Branding side - length is somewhat irrelevant, it really is more of a case by case basis. If your brand is Roger's Cool Shoe Shop and you register RCSS dot com as your domain - yes its shorter, but now you are expcting people to remember that RCSS = Rogers Cool Shoe Shop - where as if you just registered Rogerscoolshoeshop dot com while longer - its just easier to remember. Harder to type in for the user but easier to remember.

Keep in mind unless your site is one someone visits daily - its highly unlikely they will be typing the url and more likely they will search for it as they need it. Also if your site is a site they visit all the time, once they get there a few times, it will be cookied (ideally) and the browser will autopopulate when they type.
  • Short domain names are easier to read and they are also easier to remember if you summrige your service or products in short definetly go for short domain name.
  • As Dave told you, for SEO it doesn't matter.

You may want one over the other for branding, mainly if you are doing a lot of print advertising or TV and radio ads.

Ignore the people who say to go with the shorter one because it is easier to type in. It's not a great reason to choose a domain name.

Almost nobody types in domains anymore. If they are trying to go to your site, the browser autocompletes them if they have been there before, and if not, they just search for you.

  • Hey,

Ultimately, you should be looking for what is memorable and brandable. As others have mentioned, for SEO this does not really matter unless your domain name is an exact match keyword. For usability, the shorter domain will be best as long as the word itself is something user-friendly and not a bunch of letters.

Out of curiosity, which one did you choose?
  • Hello,

"it's not the longer and shorter domain, What is the best domain name length?
Aim for 6-14 characters - and remember the shorter, the better. Most likely the shorter domain names are taken a LONG time ago and sold for thousands of dollars. If you can't find something short, make it brandable."
  • I prefer a short domain easy to remember and also Google prefer. Longer domain more complex and not easy to remember.

  • Thanks for posting a nice topic.

You need to know which is a better domain, Shorter or logger?
So my answer in a Shortline is....
Shorter domain is the best choice, Because shorter keyword will finding. Most of the web user search by short keyword.

    Thanks again.

    • I have to disagree with you r#4: Amazon.com is doing quite well without it. So is etsy.com, for instance.

  • no its ok with that

  • Domain names don't have any impact on SEO and your organic ranking, so you have the freedom here to decide which fits more you requirements, and what would be the better choice for your audience.

I usually prefer shorted domain as they are more easy to remember and they stick quickly in the memory, so because of it I would go for this option, but it won't be a mistake if you select longer one as well.

    • I am DABK here. Do you know how many times people call me Dbak when responding to my posts?

Have you tried typing Dabk in your response? Was it autocorrected to Dubai or Danke?

  • Hey,

There's no correlation between domain length and SEO, but to make it easier for the audience to memorize your domain, go for the shorter.

  • At some point domain name matters from an SEO point of view, but it would be great if your domain name is easy to remember to your audience.
