Nofollow tag before href or after?

This may be a dumb question and I guess it doesnt matter....but let's make sure. Does the rel="nofollow" tag need to be inserted at the beginning of href or at the end?

E.g: <a rel="nofollow" href="www-example-com">Example keyword</a> vs <a href="www-example-com" rel="nofollow" >Example keyword</a>.

The reason I'm asking is because my comments plugin automatically puts the "nofollow" attribute at the end as in the second example. And when I use my nofollow plugin for my page I notice that these links get highlighted as dofollow links. Strange, no?

So does it make a difference, yes or no? In other words - does Google only acknowledge one over the other? I'd really like to know.

Doesnt make any difference either way, it reads it exactly the same way, Google will read the <a> as a block so anything contained in that block will be read where ever it is.

Ive always preferred it after the links however.

So sticking the "no follow" in the header tags is a waste of time then

Stick it where you like, but stick it in the wrong place and you are just wasting your time.

        Just my 2c

"no index, no follow" works in the right place at the right time.

Do a google search for robots.txt.

  • Makes no difference where the attribute is placed within the code for the hyperlink.

Google's own example places it at the end.

However placing the code in a header would cause all the links on the page to be nofollowed. May or may not be a good idea depending on what you are trying to accomplish.

    It does not matter.
    Place it where you want.
