Do Higher Rankings Convert Better?

It's obvious that a higher ranking in the search engines will bring more visitors, but do they also result in more relative conversions?

Is a visitor who clicks on a top 3 position more inclined to buy than a visitor who clicks on the 7'th position?

What psychological and demographic factors are at play here?

Are you more likely to encounter a 'slow' decision maker on a lower ranking? Visitors in research phase?

I think so.

There may also be the added benefit of trust in a high ranking.

What do you think and what would be the consequences?

I think the most important factor here is the
ACTUAL search term they typed in to get
there. If one is looking to buy and the 7th
result contains what he/she is looking for,
    then why won't they buy?

No, that is not true. Conversion is a factor of keyword search engine traffic and website content/ads.

I think that conversion mostly depends on the look&feel of the website, on how much authority you show.

If ranking was so important, who will actually buy on a sponsored adwords link? There's no real "ranking" on it.

I second what Jacob said. If I've passed over the top couple of results it's because I'm scanning for the "free" option.

The target audience for most marketers is probably the kind of person just just wants the product as quick as easy as possible, so they can get off this "interweb thing" and get back to whatever they were watching on tv.

I guess if you have a great product though and you have a quality market in mind, they will find you whether you are ranked 1st or 9th.

In my experience the top 3 sites convert way better than all of them after that. My feeling is that the people that get down to the #7 and #8 result are more searchers than buyers. The buyers already bought after clicking on a few results.

This is only my experience though. It's also one of the main reasons that I focus on adsense now. It's much easier to make money in the 5 to 10th position from adsense than from affiliate programs.
