Do You Comment on Blogs Just for the Backlinks?

I wanted to pose this question to fellow Warriors after reading some of the responses in Aaron Elliot's thread about commenting on blogs and whether it (still) works or not.

Personally, I comment on blogs only if I feel I have something of value to add as a reader. Any backlinks I might happen to get, I look at as just icing on the cake. But I know at the same time, other "SEOs" are just focused on traffic, traffic, traffic.

What about you?

I also comment on a good few blogs in my niche. Yes you do get backlinks which as you said is icing on the cake. I think commenting on blogs is a great way to build up relationships with people and as you go around lots of blogs you can always pick up great tips and learn something. Plus its fun to do with so many interesting people with interesting points of view.

I spent a weekend building a tool that would find blog pages related to my keyword/topic, then post links to them in my blogs/websites and do all the pingbacks..(not comments exactly, but basicly the same)

after doing all that work, I have come to the conclusion that darn near every blog in existance is no-follow. It may be good for direct traffic from the blogs, but the seo benefits seem to have already had their day.
