keyword research - top 10 analysis, struggling to pin down the best

Thanks for looking. My keyword research is quite good, but in need of refinement. Let me just describe my process and then explain the problem. Also, I'd really appreciate any tips on my keyword research approach.

Enter main term in GKT, then search all the terms that the main term produces. Then put this big list in the free version of Market Samurai and rather than set a maximum competition level, I prefer to filter by competition, as some higher competition terms are worth going for because of a great comp/search volume ratio. Then I filter the list by exact match search volume of minimum 1000, add all-in-title results, and note down the best keywords based on competition and-all-in-title results.

Then I take these terms which have low to lowish competition and all-in-title figures and put them in Traffic Travis' SEO search, and add the PR, age, and links to page numbers for the top 3 sites to a text file. I also indicate if they include title, description, and H1 optimization for that keyword. I'm aiming to rank 1st, as a lot of my keywords only get 1-2k exact match search volume.

Now I know this is pretty good method, but from my noted down keywords list of around 5-15, it's often hard to pinpoint the 5-7 keywords to optimize for. My problem is this, I need to get some really reliable information on the relative importances of the factors, competition, all-in-title, all the information about the top 10 that can be gathered. Can someone please direct me to a trustworthy source?

The vast majority of these ranking sites don't have on-page optimization for these terms, and I want a better sense of how difficult it is to compete against sites that are completely ignoring the keyword, I.E, how much on-page counts vs. off-page. I heard it's about a 30/70 on-page/off-page split. Anyone got any ideas about this? Also, how could I improve on my research method?

Thanks then!

    hi dani,

i think you are over thinking this if you are going for non competitive words...

usually what i do is go for the words with less than 50K in quotes and its worked for me for quite some time.

the allintitle and everything like that doesn't seem to matter if you follow this rule.

if you PM me ill send you my trigger word tool :-) it will help with this.

Anything over 35k can be very hard to rank for

You're making it too labor intensive and not focusing on what really matters.

It boils down to (at a VERY high level):
      1. Find keywords with sufficient "exact" search levels
      2. Compare the strength of the top 3 (if that's your goal) sites that currently rank for those terms
      3. Pick the terms float to the top as the easiest to rank for based on 1) # backlinks, 2) PR, and 3) Domain age in that order
Number of competing pages, allinanything, and sites on page two or later mean nothing. The top three sites on page one are all that matters.

End of story. Time saved. Money made. Charge on.

PS. SEOQuake plugin for FireFox is your best friend!

From your original post, to the best of my understanding, you are trying to look for:
    A. Deeper data & "competitive analysis" for the main keywords you selected & to analyze what keywords are driving the top 10 rankings based of competition based on the keywords you selected.

    1. The backlinks should be your key KPI to measure difficulty & compared to the existing Top 10 results across engines for a selected period of time.
--If your main keywords are not the main driver of the competition, other factors from Market Samurai should provide you w/ those answers (ie: Age of site, number of pages (w/ specific words), current traffic levels, etc).
    2. Additional data analysis you can gather on competitive keywords would be:
    A. Compete.com
    B. Quantcast.com
--both of these will give you deeper insights into
    3. Majestic SEO will provide you w/ backlink competitive intelligence as well.

I want to reiterate MarkR's comment about SEO Quake!

Once you turn it on and highlight the top 10 sites for a particular search, you can right click and export this info to an excel file.

You will see exactly why certain sites rank - so you then can start to mimic their backlinks, keywords, etc.

It is a very cool free tool!

It is also great for showing potential clients how their site compares to their search competition...very powerful...

I'd use SEOquake before and just forgot about it since doing keyword research last. It's very similar to the SEO feature of Traffic Travis, but you do get to click on the yahoo backlinks to check them out. But having done this, there doesn't seem to be that much information about them.

Thanks for recommending Majestic SEO, that seems to offer a more in-depth look at the value of the backlinks in relation to anchor text used, I'd heard of it before, but never got round to looking into it, so thanks!

But let me just use an example to explain the problem that still remains. I'm finding that even keywords with 1k exact match search volume and less than 20k competing pages tend to have a a top 3 sites that looks something like this: (pr, age, page backlinks):

    2 3 14757
    4 4 6740
    4 2 61380

My niche is competitive and that's typical. Now none of these three sites have any on-page optimization for the keyword, at least, not shown. So how would my on-page setup being geared towards that keyword + anchor text in that keyword stack up against sites ranking for it with this quantity of backlinks? I just have no idea whether or not they are beatable, but perhaps I should just go for a higher search volume keyword, as most of them have sites with this many backlinks in the top 3!

The stats you posted for the top 3 for your keyword are pretty strong. Are they beatable? Yes. Will it take time and test your patience? Yes.

Frankly speaking, if that keyword is getting 1k exact searches (which btw is just an estimate, it could be totally off) its not really worth going after with that sort of competition even if you are willing to compete. Unless ofcourse, the keyword is highly targeted and you know your conversion rates for traffic from that keyword will be really high. Then again how do you even that?

Solution: keep digging for more keywords, use tools like wonder wheel in Google to fish out some hidden gems. I sometimes just plug a sales page of the product you are thinking to monetize your site with and see what keywords are being targeted.

And simple like MarkR said, all the other crap that people feed about search in quotes and etc is not important. You want to rank in the top 10 so you look at the top 10, not the 35 000 competing pages.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks then, and thanks to the rest of you. I am fully committed to checking out the sites already ranking as the main measure. I suppose competition or all-in-title could be very useful if you're stuck deciding between two keywords.

I'm also going to raise my minimum exact match searches to 2000 unless the keyword is an ultra-relevant buying keyword, because, as you say, it could be a big struggle only to gain another 10-15 hits a day by being in first position. But then even half that many hits from a buying keyword could be a great boast.
