I understand backlink fluctuations are normal thing. I added a quite a few backlinks everyday small amounts 10-20 links for moths.

I am seeing my backlinks disappearing instead of increasing at all. I understand, some new links may take time to show up, even if pinged but what about already established links? It is not 1-5, it is drop of 100s, hence I am bit concerned.

Edited: I am using Yahoo Site Explorer to find backlinks.
These links are from blog commenting, article marketing, RSS feed. I did use one auto Ping site to ping my sites a few days ago. Other than that nothing is new, nothing spammy or backlink services used, all done by me. (unless someone doing something behind my back)

More details would probably be useful as to whether these are links no longer reported by search engines, a backlink research tool or have you actually visited the link pages?

Are these spammy links, like forum profiles that are subject to purging?

You forgot to tell us one important piece of information. How are you determining your number of backlinks? Are you looking in Google? Yahoo? Using Market Samurai? Google Webmaster Tools? Another tool?

It may not be your backlinks disappearing as much as the way the tool is reporting backlinks. As an example, you might have 100's of backlinks you can manually verify, but Google only reports a handful of them. Why? Because they want to. It helps hide how their algorithm works, avoids webmasters encroaching on other webmasters techniques, etc..

I know Market Samurai a short time ago changed how they sourced Back Links to Page information due to a major change by Yahoo.

      Webex, Barry,

I added above in edit section. Yahoo to find my links and nothing spammy. I do not check my backlinks everyday also, so I am not sure when links started disappearing, does it happen to any of you?

One thing to also keep in mind is that to hide their algorithm they will some times remove already established links. Just so that it makes it harder for individuals to reverse engineer their algorithm. If one was able to easily reverse engineer this they would most certainly be able to figure out the most important factors to hold and maintain the number one spot.

A good example of what you are experiencing is like 2 of my sites. I recently bought the same linking package for both sites. One site is about a year and a half old which already had over 2k backlinks in yahoos site explorer. However the other site is only a few months old and shows more backlinks then the other site that already had 2k backlinks. Both sites got the same exact package and the same ammount of backlinks but the older one has less backlinks then the newer one. This is just them covering their --- so you can not reverse engineer there algorithm.

Your best bet is to just monitor your rankings for the keyword your are targeting with your backlinks. Once you stat seeing your self on the front page for your main keywords you can start slowing down the process and start targeting a new keyword. A good way to find a good keyword to help boost the already established one is to use googles wonderwheel. Just type in your main keyword and hit search and activate the wonderwheel in the more search options. This will give you highly relevant keywords related to your main keyword. Which would give you a nice boost for your main keyword if you where to start targeting them.

Some of those keywords may not have a good amount of traffic. But your main concern first should be your first keyword then branching out from there. Once you establish that one keyword it is that much easier to start growing your search based keywords. Since you would have a well established keyword already.

    Petevamp,

Thanks a lot. I do not think I have used wonderwheel, where should I look for it?

    Frankrock,

I know what backlink is, that was not the question.

there are many things that could happen to result this. Not all backlinks are going to stick. Sometimes some linls can get lost and after some time they come back

    This is like dancing

If some of those links were from the blog networks (some link packages use them) they sometimes tend to disappear. Here's why, they get automatically pinged when they get posted on the homepage, but soon scroll off and eventually the searchengines will recognize that the link no longer exists and it'll disappear eventually. I had that happen with a popular blog network, they appeared soon after posting the article, but when I went back to check a few months later most were gone, most were homepage links at the time they were displaying.

Just as an adon if you use the Google webmaster tool for your own site, it will show a lot more links. I have a site that I built a lot of links for, yahoo search tool, showed only 3, Google webmaster showed 700 - and my site was ranking. hop this helps
