When targeting product names, how do I avoid my competitors affiliate tracking cookies from getting on my prospects pc first?

What if I'm NOT in the IM niche? How do I ask my prospect to remove his cookies before he purchases from me, so I get the commission?

    You ask the wrong question.

Dont ask how to "remove" competitor's cookies - instead let the customer click through YOUR link to the offer. The last one always gets the cake. (If they click from your aff link, the older cookie is getting overwritten)

After further research I think I disagree with you. This seems not always to be the case.

I just found this blogpost on how affiliate systems work... Ever heard of first touch and last touch cookies?

Affiliate Cookies Are Not Oreoes! (AKA How To Not Get Burned By Affiliate Cookies)

Definitely an eye opener and something to keep in mind.

Edit: but it sure makes me wonder, what about Clickbank and CJ.com?

I am in aff marketing for some years and i honestly NEVER even heard the term "first touch cookie". A google search doesnt yield too much info there either. (In fact, that blog post is the ONLY reference even mentioning this)

I am positive that all the common programs do not use this, respective have doubts that such a "first touch cookie system" even exists!

You can easily test this (quickest method if you have doubts) to force an affiliate cookie from someone else on your machine...go through someone ELSE's afflink, eg. for clickbank...and then right before checkout, on the payment page you will see their ID on the bottom.

Now you go through YOUR link, and you will see the id has changed.

You overcomplicate this...simply send them through your link.

      Hi Katya,
Thanks a lot for the link to the first time and last time cookies article. Very interesting. I have come across Flash cookies which cannot be cleared when you do the conventional clearing of cookies in your browser. Also, another system is to integrate the referral of a potential customer (through a signup) into the database of the affiliate program. This is hard coded and the subsequent conversion of that potential customer into paying customer at any point of time down the line is guaranteed
