It depends now, if you are dealing with a small website volume, you should target your keyword on the homepage itself.. Otherwise if you are dealing with some big site, which includes many pages within, you should target the keyword according to the pages..

Ya, good question. Dont get confused. dont think about serp first. select the proper keyword for all of your pages as per the details available in the pages. Place the main keyword in your main page. And title other pages as per their functionality.

For Eg : if the main keyword of your product is help desk software, then place this keyword in your index page itself. When you are having some page explaining "asset management" , focus the largely searched keyword like asset management and then you can also use the second keyword. dont do keyword stuffing.

Only if you do like this, your pages will get indexed properly for the corresponding keyword. People who search for help desk software want to see a page related to that only, but not asset management page. The other page may get indexed but it wont give you visitors or downloads but only have increased bounce rate.

If you find this answer useful, give me a thanks

Ultimately you just want your keywords to point to the most relevant page. So whether thats your homepage or a sales page depends on your site structure, etc.
