Does anybody know whether shortened URL's have any backlink value at all?

Do the links still count towards your SEO efforts?

They have no effect on seo but they may accelerate your indexing by search engines

From what I understand they do not get indexed or counted. I am really confused on why people still use these URL shorter sites when with your own domain you can create a great looking clocked link. sitename/go/productname

So they cancel out any potential back link juice?

I would suggest for simple, specific, and natural url for the site. Quality must be considered.

My understanding is that the back link is still good using a shortened url. I stole this excerpt from About.com...

"The good news is that TinyURL and most other URL shortening services use a "301 redirect," to forward users to the full URL. This type of redirect tells browsers and search engines that they should permanently redirect to the new site, and the PageRank of the URL is transferred just fine."
