How do you move up a letter, with google local? I'm currently D. Do you optimise the site in the same way you would for the regular listings?

Also, I'm trying to rank for a local term for a specific site of mine, and I do rank for the term I'm going after, it's just Google displays the completely wrong site in the local listings...

eg.

Keyword is english lessons in new york

I rank for the term, but my english lessons site doesn't show, my french lessons website does instead!

Any ideas?

Be careful adding keywords to the business name for the purpose of increasing your ranking. You can lose some of your web references that way by not having the same business name across the board.

For a definitive list of things that help (and hurt) your local seo, check this out:
Local Search Ranking Factors | Local SEO Best Practices for Google, Bing, Yahoo

You'll find some of the top names in local SEO adding to the discussion there. (David Mihm, Mike Blumenthal, Mike Belasco, Steve Espinosa, etc.) It's a long read, but ABSOLUTELY spot-on when it comes to local seo.

    Hope that helps...

Also, Google Places (assume thats what you mean) factors citations very heavily

Suggest researching this on G - this is one of the first things that came up - disclaimer - not my biz or anyone I know)

The key in local marketing (google places/yahoo local/ bing local/maps) is citations, you need to get as many backlinks citation as you can from high PR websites, and also don't forget about reviews!
