Opt for do-follow social bookmarks, i wouldn't do blog commenting through softwares unless its a 'disposable' site.
Even press release do good jobs.

Softwares and footprints go hand in hand, the footprints may be invisible today, tomorrow but not forever.
10000's of people using the same software, and no footprints? Impossible.
As for good list just do a Google mate, that should help.

    Bookmarking Demon for social bookmarking.

There's a lot of other ways to build backlinks, but you're right to stay away from blog commenting, they're not very good for SEO.

dont use those links. Most of them are nofollow , also most of them they dont work after 5-10 days.

Here's what you can do Morgan.

Backlink to your micro niche site on a scheduler. Don't mass blast all articles at once.

    Why? You might get sandboxed.

After a few days, gather the Live Links and then backlink to your Live Links; aka backlink to your backlink.

    Hope this helps.

Do video submission and include link in the description.
Submit article to blog networks with links.
Check your competition links and get them yourself, those that you can of course.
Blog commenting also works, if you use software don't over do it. Getting 10000 backlinks in one day is not a good idea on a new website.
Get .edu and .gov links, anywhere you can since they are more valuable.
Get high pr links, and I don't mean domain PR but page PR, get them anywhere you can.
      Press releases

These are the most effective ways.

Careful, thought-out comments on high-PR blog PAGES can go a VERY long way.

+1 for backlinking web 2.0s with AMR and then BLing your Livelinks after a few days too, I do that all the time, seems to work a treat

Agreed. Don't blast your main site to thousands of low quality, spammed / dead blogs. This can be a decent method if you're trying to get other links indexed, but it's dangerous on your main domain.

Legitimate comments on higher PR posts is much more beneficial. And a lot safer.

Have some .EDU or .GOV backlinks to your site because it will give authority to your site which will encourage search engines to boost your ranking as well as give your site good PR.

Captain you should take care about backlink quality. it is recommended to get PR,dofollow backlink then worthless nofollow backlink

I'do more article marketing, but with dofollow high PR directories to get some link juice:
Most AMR directories are low PR and take ages to be crawled by google.

I like to create some social blogs: squidoo, live journal, blogger, multiply, etc and post articles to them to get some good links. Then I also use profile backlinks on these posts

You could also blast the web 2.0 sites with AMR & then index those via blog comments

I'd worry more about diversifying your anchor text than the actual location that the links come from. High PR links will obviously yield better results, but low PR ones can do well too if your anchor text is varied enough.

I've been blasting some pages I suspect of being penalized with generic anchor text links to remove the penalty. It's been pretty successful so far.

Why not try what you've got, and see where you land?
      Then go from there.
