i found a key word that gets 90 thousand searches a month according to Google keywords tool.the exact domain name for that keyword is not registered. i was wondering how would i check how many other websites are competing for that keyword. is it the allinurl search in google?
cos if that is it i hit the jackpot as there is only 800 websites...

if i quote the keywords in google i get 3000 results ( i dont know what quoting function does)

there is a clickbank product based around this key word too.

  • Is that 90,000 broad or exact searches a month?

Either way, the best way to check the competition is to look at the sites currently ranking on page one (there's no point in trying to rank for anything less)

Either look at the sites manually to see if there are any highly optimized and/or authority sites in the top 10 results, or use a keyword tool to analyse the competition.

Traffic Travis is good if you don't already have any software (there's a free version of TT)

    • exact match and the top website on google that shows up is a ehow article. is this good?

if i type in the keyword in google it doesnt even show websites with the keyword. it shows a shortened version of the keyword. am confused
  • That's potentially good. An ehow article is relatively easy to bump off.

The other useful factor to look at is how many sites have the exact keyword phrase in their title.

If you find there are sites ranking in the top 10 without the exact phrase in the title, it generally means they are quite doable to knock off.

A useful site for getting and comparing metric of sites is Open Site Explorer: Link Popularity & Backlink Analysis Tool

    • As important as how many competitors this keyword has is how strong they are.
As UMS has said, check the 10 top sites for this keyword and try to figure out if you can beat any of them, basically looking at the number of backlinks, the PR and the keyword in title.

I use market Samurai and SEcockpic to check the competition, but there is a free tool called Niche Market Finder that does a pretty good job. Here is the link:

  • In the GAKT, in the left column there is the section "Match Types". By default this is set to "Broad". Uncheck "Broad" and check "[Exact]"

  • As mentioned previously, Traffic Travis gives you a really handy summary of the competition plus its rating of how difficult it would be.

Here's an example for "golf clubs".
