Hello, I don't know anything about monetizing a website and was wondering if my site that gets 4,000 or so unique hits a day could make me any money?

I don't really want to sell products or anything and I've heard adsense will only make you pennies. Is there something good out there like pay per click or similar?

Thanks in advance

It depend on your website niche. To me Adsense is the one of the best way to monetise your website. Yes, eran per click is tiny but again it depend on the keyword (niche).

Fireman, think about this... how much effort and money you have spend to get this 4k unique visitor a day.

You should somehow capture their email by offering them free stuff. If 1% subscribe in a month you would have 1200 subscribers.. that is a lot. So don't just let them pass by..and say bye! bye! :-)

You know this people is GOLD if you know how to approach.

Great poins! Building your subscriber list is the best way to make money online in my opinion. With only 1% of the traffic subscribing to your list it will build quickly. A list will always provide you with people you can sell products, and help spread your word.

      Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies. Many of the visitors "like" the site on facebook, would that be the same as a list? Some sign up on the site to make comments as well.

I am not really sure how targeted the traffic is, the site is a humor blog with 99% of the visitors being male 18-35.

Does anyone know of ads where you make money from visitors seeing them?

In my experience, two of the lowest paying niches are sports and humor. I had a humor blog that got 10,000 hits per day and I was lucky to make $1 a day in Adsense. One thing I did do ok with was CPA offers from NeverBlue for dating and screensavers. They earned about $50 per month.

In the end, the site was just sucking bandwith from my server and earning relatively nothing. The only time I made any money with it was when I sold it to someone else on Flippa for $1000.

This. I had a humor blog that only made me money on Flippa. lmao

Other niches would of made me six figs with the amount of traffic I had

You want to make sure your list is responsive to your marketing, otherwise your list can cost you money as well (in the form of time and autoresponder limits). The money is in the list IF the list is responsive.

4,000 unique visitors depend on niche and whether it is targeted traffic. 1 month would be 120,000 visitors. It is not very difficult to make money for that traffic.

I have to ask this question, does Googles Adsense still work, I can remember over a year ago or probably less than that people were going mad trying to get signed up to Google Adsense, I have an account with them but have only briefly used it, as I wasn't generating any income from it?? just wondered

4,000 unique visits a day is very nice. That is more than enough to make some real money online, because people do it with much less. The amount of money you make depends on how targeted your visitors are and why they're coming to your site.

Why don't you consider making your own products?

    Hello fireman,

First off, I wanted to say Welcome to the forums, since I saw this is your first post. I haven't been here as much as I should either...

Second off, a lot of Internet Marketers ask me this same question, "How much is a good amount of traffic." I honestly wish that there was a hard and fixed answer to thsi question, but unfortunately, it really depends on a lot of different factors.

Most importantly, is the basic principle of all commerce, supply and demand. Is there more demand for your product than there currently is supply? If so, you have a good start. Also, what technique are you using to get your traffic to convert? Are you Direct Linking to some sort of offer, or are you doing a pre-sell page, and if so, what do you want on the Pre-sell page?

Most importantly, does your website sell itself? The most important thing in Online Marketing (just like every other form of Marketing, is to ask yourself, how does my website sell?). For this, you need to have excellent copywriting on your website... I would recommend either mastering copywriting yourself, or pay good money in order to get a really good copywriter.

So... Ultimately, to answer your question, Is 4,000 unique visitors a day enough to make "good money", it depends on what your definition of good money is, but I would say, if you have an offer/product that is in demand, a good product/pre-sell page, with amazing copy on it, and you're able to get traffic at very reasonable rates, then I would say 4,000 unique visitors per day will allow you to rake in the dough. ;-)

If you have any more questions, please post them below and I will try to get to them asap. :-)

Here's the thing. It's not a marketing site, I'm not selling anything. People are coming for the content. I am just hoping to monetize the site through advertising, or maybe some sort of pay per click.

I really mean it when I say I have zero knowledge of this stuff.

If 4000 people are visiting your website daily, it wouldn't be hard to get at least 1% (40) of them to do what you want them to do to make some money... think of it that way

I was just reading an article, (just google Why your Adsense Sites could be leaving money on the table) where i found these figures that may interest you.
You may expect to earn from 0,11USD/unique visitor to 1,51USD/unique visitor. Depending on the monetization source you will be chosing, being adsense one of the lower incoming sources. But I encourage you to read the full article.

I think one of the questions that you are really asking is -- Is there something you could put up on your website (like Adsense ads) and possibly earn some money just from doing what you're doing and receiving the 4000 visitors you are receiving?

I think the answer is yes, probably, a little bit.

Now, as others have pointed out, if you want to do some really deliberate things to capture visitors, offer freebies, create info products, put up affiliate links, and so on, then your earnings possibility would be more.

But if you want to do nothing in addition to what you are already doing, then I'd say ... sure, put up Adsense and see if you could earn a little bit. It can't hurt.
        {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[3946800].message }}
        • With 4000 unique visitors a month, I would think it would be fairly easy to make at least something.

I agree that Adsense certainly can't hurt, as long as it's non-intrusive. As far as related affiliate products: joke books, books by comedians, DVDs, funny posters/signs, and some of the places like T-Shirt Hell, especially. You could also put your site's logo on t-shirts and coffee cups and such and sell them on Cafe Press.

I think your market being males 18-35, means you want to have ads for electronics.

Maybe you could have a link on the sidebar to a new section of your site...It would have funny reviews of some products, like...for instance, ebook readers- "A pedophile's look at the Kindle... A Pimp's look at da Nook..."

I don't know....something stupid like that! But put actually good information in the reviews, just done in a character's persona or something. So people read it and share it cause it's funny, but in the end they think "huh, that's actually a good review with good information".

4,000 uniques a day is A LOT of income potential.

            That could actually work, too.

I can vouch that a 'character' can sometimes boost a product's sales considerably. My first product was an ebook written and marketed 'in character', and people took to it instantly thinking I was some sort of mysterious authority figure who went by an unusual monicker to mask his identity. Had I sold it as just plain Brad, I'm sure it wouldn't have done nearly as well.

That same character also eventually led me into several other lucrative ventures, as well.

You could be the "Redneck Reviewer" or something like that.

4000 visitors a month is more then enough to make money. Since you don't want to sell anything the only thing you really can do is use some sort of pay per click program. However, I would suggest you start building a list, find out what they want, create a product that provides the information they want and sell it to them.

I think the answers of others are right on here. You need to capture some type of their information for lead generation. Offer someone something if you are not in the want to "sell". 4000 unique visitors a day is great but it can't stop there. What are you going to do to ensure that these 4000 visitors are generating some type of income for you?

Some other places you could try if your not sure on adsense

I would to be quite honest what we did for our client's pages and social media is set up a home(FaceBookFanpages) on facebook like your own page and link it to your website. Making more traffic come free to your pages,And generally making your website Viral or into a community who will be talking about your page day-in-day out.

One question i have is how long in duration do your visitors stay for after viewing your content, Google Ananlystic shows this infomation if you haved this installed,

The reason i mention that is because you can use that infomation to determine what part of your site is attracting the most visitors.

Some other places you could try if your not sure on adsense
    Peerfly.com(CPA network)
    Cj.com(again CPA network)
    Amazon Affiliates program
Buysellads.com(exchange with other websites and sell ad space)

One factor we took in finding things for our pages is to incude items that match what your site is about,

Alot of people i have known who are clients for our business seem after we have set up the social media fan pages and websites for businesses seem to plaster alot of google adsense over the place which is a good way to make money but it takes people away from your site over time. The purpose is to keep them on your site which is why we never use adsense. We made far more money from the buysellads i noted and CPA plus you have control also on were the ads can be placed

If you mentioned the 400,000 or so visits you would get some great offers for space on your site from buysellads and can charge on a per month basis.

    hope that helps

CPA = Cost Per Action - meaning a visitor to your site has to perform a specific action after they click through for you to generate a commission. It can be signing up for a website, purchasing an item, etc.

as someone has stated it means cost per action can work like this

say you had a site with CPA banners offering a product related to your site. when one of your visitors clicks on the offer and fills in some data (email or name address or mobile number or survey ect) you get paid for that visitor for directing traffic to the CPA network who runs the offer.

        hope that helps

It totally depends on the niche and the quality of your visitors. You may make only a few dollars with 4,000 visitors, if your website is totally irrelevant to them. On the other hand you may make $$$ a day if your website has the information what they are looking for and does a good job in terms of conversion.

Try all sorts of advertising and affiliate programs and see which one works best on your website. Nobody can give you an exact answer about this to you, you have to test yourself.

I don't know from where you heard that AdSense will only make pennies, this is not true at all. I get $1+ clicks regularly on two of my AdSense sites. And honestly, if your site is not based around a specific niche, AdSense could be your best earner.

That type of traffic is very hard to earn with pay with click. humor, quotes, etc doesn't convert well.

But if you can get the traffic high enough, you can make money via CPM.

It depends how targeted the 4,000 unique visitors are. You can make money with literally a handful of visitors a day. If those 4000 are untargeted you'll struggle to make anything much.

      Hey,

Definitely build a mailing list- fresh joke/day or something like that.

Then, find relevant products (such as T-shirts, comedians DVDs (which you might advertise through your joke/day as being one of their acts captured on youtube),etc.)

      Secondly - Sell Add Space!

With that much unique visitors daily, you'll have no problem getting your hands on some quick money with this technique

      Good Luck!

It isn't enough to have 4,000 unique visitors to your site. If they are just visiting and not buying, you obviously can't make any money. You have to generate some idea of how to get them to spend money somewhere. If I were you I would look into PPC options. Also, if you have a way to test them and access the analytics you will be able to see if it is enough to make the money you want/need. You might have to make some adjustments or look at other options, but that is a good place to start.

Its enough, grant it your vistors are targeted and share a common interest (increases conversion rate). You should also look into getting into some CPA networks and posting banners. Offer to sell some banner ads/space on your site (heck, let me buy some of your space ;-))

You can make money off of a site getting 4,000 uniques a month. You can do so many things, I don't even have time to list them all. If you're collecting emails you can send weekly or monthly newsletters with tips, tricks, news, and offers to things your visitors may be interested in.

The posibilites are endless. See, you don't have to sell anything at all if you dont wanna!

The amount of traffic you are getting is very good. I suggest you try and build a list from your visitors because they may only see your site once. Build a list and promote cpa offers to them.

It's not as hard as you think it is Fireman. I run an e-commerce site that is actively looking for the exact demographics that you have as visitors. Selling advertising or participating in an affiliate program is certainly something you should look at. We have a good number of affiliates just like you who earn monthly based on sales referred from sites just like yours.

4,000 views a day is awesome and I wish one of my sites got that kind of traffic! If your visitors have found you through keyword search then you've won a watch, but the main aim is traffic and mainly targeted.

It depends what niche your site is in and what is the purpose of the visitors.

But people are looking for one of these 3 things:
    1. Products to buy.
    2. Information.
    3. Entertainment.

#1 is probably out of the question.

for #2 I would simply start building a list and offer free and useful information to the subscribers. Maybe create a simple ebook to offer something valuable for the subscribers to tempt them in. Once you have created a large enough list and offered value (information) you may start monetizing the list.

for #3 - try CPA - either free stuff, gaming niche or netflix

    Hope this helps

I can tell you from experience that humor blogs are very difficult to monetize. The problem is that visitors to that type of blog aren't there to buy anything, they're there to be entertained.

So, with that logic, you might think that you should promote things like comedy DVD's and humor books; but, unfortunately, that doesn't work. I've tried it.

And, please, PLEASE don't do this: Don't try to write presell pages disguised as humor posts... you will wind-up diluting your successful blog and start to lose readers.

I ruined my once-successful humor blog trying to find ways to monetize it. I never did have 4,000 uniques a day - not consistently anyway - but I did have a solid 1,500 a day and even had my blog featured on CNN once.

If those 4,000 people a day are there because they want to read your funny posts, I figure you've got two options:

    1. Gather the best 10 or 20 blog posts you've got, edit them to read as delightful as possible, then go to CreateSpace and have them published into a print book on Amazon. Then just promote your own writing (after all, that's what people are there for anyway).

    2. Sell advertising on your blog. 4,000 visitors isn't going to get you major money, but you should be able to get $800 - $1,000 a month out of it.

    Hope this helps

Could you possibly elaborate on a good place to do this? I signed up on buysellads.com and my site is being reviewed.

I also opened a spreadshirt account and sold a dozen shirts and five hats in my first day with them on the site, I thought that was pretty cool.

To the people who say I did it all backwards by not having a monetizing plan in place. I started this site as a joke for fun and through word of mouth and facebook/twitter etc. it just took off. I never thought I would have all this traffic.

        That's brilliant, well done!

Now consider: if you can start to capture email addresses of subscribers, you can regularly send out a newsletter - make it "weekly round up of the best jokes this week" or whatever - and advertise your hat, tshirt, whatever within that email.

In order to encourage signups, hold a monthly prize draw where one subscriber wins a t-shirt. You could also try approaching companies or individuals whose products you think would be a good fit for your readership, and ask them to sponsor a giveaway. For example, if you know someone (at any degree - just to the point where you've exchanged blog comments) who has a humour book or DVD or some sort of product, you can ask them for a copy to give away to your newsletter prize draw, and of course in exchange you give publicity to their product.

If yuo make sure your newsletter has interesting, informative content then it is more likely to be read and acted on than if you just throw out a load of adverts with one joke in the middle.

It seems like this site has been your "brainchild" from start to finish so it would be a real shame now to "pollute" it with trying too hard to make money off it.

I will say that I have seen humor sites start to monetize and then be bought out for a fat profit by places like Cheezburger network, etc. Equally I've seen them fall flat on their faces by trying to go too hard, too fast. Beware of scaring off your readers by oversell.

Also in terms of your own products, consider producing books or calendars - these can be a great moneyspinner for humor sites, particularly around Xmas.

        Good luck!

Considering the niche you are in this may be your best monetizer. In time your site may become as known for humor as for a great site to buy giveaways. You never know. I would explore physical products further and do testing with different types of merchandize, and designs, see where it goes.

I am not sure if this was said already but another thing you might want to try is a some good affiliate offers. do a search for affiliate networks when you find a one or 2 you like you can choose a few products that you think will sell well on your site, you will make a commission off of each sale or lead.

If you find the right offer you might be able to make a decent return.

And definitely start capturing peoples emails!

I have just been talking to someone who in there first year they built a list of 600 and made $20,000 in sales, not saying in a month, I not sure what the period was, then on their second year there list went up to 5000 and they did $8,000???

Just goes to show, its not the size of the list, but the quality of that list that matters ;-)

OP - please don't take this wrong, but I see this happen from time to time and it puzzles me...

People work so damn hard to get traffic - only to have never really considered how in the world they would make money from it.

    4000 unique's a day is cool.

But you aren't making money - so you might as well be getting 0 unique's a day.

    Why?

Because traffic isn't the only part of the equation.

Anyone should always be looking out before you start with an idea of how you are going to monetize. Otherwise, it's all backwards.

4000 unique visitors is no doubt a very good number regarding traffic but you need also to focus on the fact that if these hits are not converting into sales then this number is nearly useless. Similarly if you think it as a PPC point of view than still you need to observe what are the trends of your traffic are they passing time on your website or not. You can check it from Web Analytics

You need to sell your own ads. Put up an Advertising page on your site - talk about your metrics/demographics, etc. Give them a contact email so they can deal with you directly. Have your rates ready so you can quote them and be ready to negotiate until you can find your price point.

As to the question of "who to sell ads to" check out your competitors or similar sites. Find out who is advertising there and contact them directly with an offer. Make it a nice customized email - don't go the mass mailing route. After introducing myself and my site, I usually say something like "I noticed you were advertising on _________ and wanted to let you know that I have advertising space available". Offer to give them a special promo offer or something like a discount for a 3 month prepayment.

If the idea of making pennies from Adsense doesn't appeal to you, why not sign up with an affiliate network and start promoting CPA offers? Some of those offers pay very good money...for example, if someone clicks on their banner and goes and fills out a few questions, you receive $5, or $10...I've seen offers that pay much more. 4,000 visitors is a good number. Easy to monetize.

Of course it is enough uniques to make money. In the right niche, promoting the right products and with the right 'buying' keywords', it could add up to a substantial amount of money. However, a site that only gets 40 - 50 uniques per day could also make a substantial amount of money. There are lots of factors that come into play and you need to focus on more than one of them to succeed.

I was assuming with 4,000 uniques a day that your site had been around a while and had decent pagerank. You might have trouble selling ad space if there isn't enough verifiable data out there to satisfy ad buyers.

    Affiliate / CPA offers:

Brainstorm any and all products/services your visitors may buy.

Create a shortlist of some great quality products/services by trying them out.

I suspect you have high PR, so ranking new posts/pages for buying keywords wouldn't be hard.

Create some posts targeting buying keywords promoting affiliate and CPA offers (of course promote CPA elsewhere). Then in the relevant posts, link naturally to your money pages. You'll drive traffic within your blog and from the search engines to your affiliate offers.

    Listbuilding:

Again, break down your visitors into groups (if you have a diverse readership). Then create one or a few squeeze pages to build a list. You can drive traffic internally and from the search engines (and elsewhere) to your squeeze pages to build a list.

Then you can promote your affiliate offers to that list - mixed in with some high-quality content emails.

Once you have some "money-pages" (affiliate offers and/or squeeze pages), drive as much traffic to those pages as possible.

    Memberships:

Consider creating premium content and offer site memberships for $9, $17 or $27 or higher per month.

I earn low 4 figures per month from one site with approx. 400 unique daily visitors using the affiliate promotion technique above (I'm now working on a list). With 4,000 unique daily visitors and then targeting buyers, you could earn handsomely.

I have a site with 217 IMPRESSIONS and I made $10.73 today, that is with a 19% CTR though which is hard to get. With good ad placement you should be able to make $10-$20 a day with adsense. I think if you get 4,000 views a day then you are gonna make some decent money with adsense. But if your site isn't set up in a way that makes people wanna stay on your site and buy something then no. If you dont want to sell ANYTHING or promote anything then this is going to be tough...

The amount of traffic has no bearing on how much you will make.

Take adsense off your site and ALL promotions and you won't make a penny.

Find a targeted offer and promote that and you should make some money.

There are no guarantees - just testing, testing and more testing until you find the sweet spot.

Now here is an idea how to test ,what could You make money with.

      1. Sign up for an ad network, which allows You to sell banner places on Your site. Here is a huge list of them :

      http://www.warriorforum.com/ad-netwo...c-sources.html

      2. Try offering low price at first for banner placement on Your site to get some buyers.

      3. Once You have banners on Your site, check what they look like and what they are promoting.

      4. If the same person is buying banner space from You again and again, that means it makes them more money than they pay You.

      5. Once You know what kind of products make money from your visitors, remove the ad space and put Your own banners up and take all the monneeeys .

      I Hope that helps.

It depends what subject your website is based on, but a very easy solution would be to just add an Amazon Omakase widget to your site.

This will do much better than AdSense and it's automated to offer products based on the content of your site. Commissions only start at 4%, but they go up to 6% after you make a few sales. Obviously, you can get other affiliates with better commissions, but Amazon is probably the easiest to set up.

Heck ya that is a very respectable amount of daily website traffic in my opinion. It in part depends on your niche and the type of website that you have. But you should be able to make a decent profit no matter what in my opinion.

I also think that adsense can be a great way to make money on a lot of different types of sites, whoever told you that you can only make pennies with it is wrong in my honest opinion.

I have a pure selling site, where 90% of the visitors come via real "buying" terms like...

      "xxxxx for sale"

      - and I'm selling xxxxx

No adsense, just an affiliate deal with the product, the site made well over $3000 in it's first year with less than 100 visitors a day.

Your conversion rate will depend on your traffic, this one site of mine has a CTR of several percent, in other niches it's a fraction of 1%. - but 40,000 unique visitors (not "hits"..."visitors", my 90 visitors create about 1900 hits - hits and visitors are not the same thing at all). Should bring you in a few bucks a day even with totally random traffic.

I once bought 250,000 visitors for $40, and made about $15 back with one site, and they were just totally random referrals.

So even the most random visitors you like and you should be getting $20 or more a week, if you market well and have the right offers unobtrusively there you'll make a lot more than that.

For your demographic - think very much in terms of..ahem..the "trouser department" that stuff sells, has since the dawn of civilization, and will carry on doing so till we're all sterile from riding around in nuclear cars.

      Good luck.

      Scritty
