Pingbacks to my Blog query

I post my unique articles to a large number of directories, blogs, etc and subsequently get inundated with 'please moderate comment' notices for the pingbacks this results in.
However, although I get hundreds of pingbacks, when I check my google rankings, my articles always show as having no backlinks!!!
Should I be approving all these pingbacks? is this whats causing the problem, or is it just that google hasn't spidered my links yet?
My blog is fairly new still
