local searches vs. global searches

I found a keyword that has really low competition and has global searches of 880/month and local searches of 22/month. Basically, all of the searches come from a particular country (the name of the country is in the keyword as well). It is also a great "buying" keyword. Should I try to rank for this keyword? I don't live in that country and my site is not gonna be based in the country, would that hurt rankings? Does this have any effect at all on SEO?

Look at that country's SERPs and see if you can rank, then just set it to be targeted in Webmaster Tools. I've got quite a few sites that rank well in other countries for keywords specific to those countries.

Log into your Google/webmasters account, choose:
        site configuration > settings
        then set your geo targeting.

Click on your site in Webmaster Tools, and it's Settings under Site Configuration:

When targeting users in a certain country, should I also register the domain to have the extension for that country or is setting the target country on webmaster tools the only thing I need to do?

Ideally, both, but I've ranked plenty of .com's and others in other countries.

Thanks for the response. But now I can't figure out how to verify my site in webmaster tools. It tells me to upload an html file to my site, how do I do that on wordpress?

You'd have to do that through FTP with a program like Filezilla. I'd recommend choosing one of the alternative verification options like connecting it to your Analytics account or inserting the meta tag.

Just use your theme's settings or a plugin like AIO SEO Pack or Platinum SEO that lets you add code to the header.

Hmm, that should be the correct place.
