Linkbuilding - How much is too much with an aged site?

Hey Guys,

New around here, but I have been working with SEO/Affiliate Marketing/Anything To Make A Buck Online for about a year now.

My question is, how far is too far with linkbuilding? I have seen numerous people claim not to make too many backlinks in the first 2 or 3 months of a sites existence, but no clear answer to the question "how much is too much for a website with authority?"

Obviously ethical organic linkbuilding is the best way to build your web presence, but in all honesty many warriors are using programs like AMR, Blog Blueprint, Article Ranks, and Scrapebox to develop a link profile.

So how much is too much?

I mean think about it... If Google penalized you for building too many links, couldn't you theoretically just build massive (spammy) amounts of links to your competitors and get them sandboxed?

Not that I would ever do that... But the point remains... If you could get penalized for a certain amount of links, the door is opened for sabotage...

Really just want to hear what some of the more experienced warriors have to say about this. Any examples of Big G penalties would help a lot. Honestly I feel that I may be too cautious when it comes to this.

Looking forward to the discussion...
