Affiliate Penalty? Please Review My Site

URL - Greendress.info
  • 1 Month Old
  • $100+ Spent on very high reviewed backlinking campaigns here
  • Seven 100% unique pages with 2 1000+ word articles & 3 600+ word articles
  • Not in top 1000 search results

I suspect I am being penalized for:
  • High ad-to-content ratio (Lots of Amazon links)

I am wondering what the best solution would be to amend my problem. This is my first website so please don't be quick in pointing your fingers - I'm a noobie learning the ropes. I'd like to ask experts first before committing more time.

The culmination of my research on WF led me to creating this site. I made several mistakes along the way, but I still believe I can drive the website to the top of Google.

So far the solution I am most comfortable doing is:
  • Adding 20 800+ word articles without any affiliate links

Do you think this will clear any penalties I might be under for having too many affiliate links? Is there a better solution?

Thanks,
Anton

It's not due to having too many affiliate links. You don't have too many links in relation in your content.

It's more than likely due to the Google dance because your site is still very young being only 1 month old. Have you analyzed the 1st page competition for your targetted keywords to see how strong they are?

What are you targetting as your primary keyword? Is it "green dress"? green dress is a competitive keyword with 12,100 exact monthly searches so it will take some time to rank high for it.

There are some problems with your links. I clicked on a link on the Lime Green Dress Shoe page and it took me to a page on Amazon which said "Your search "Annie Shoes Womens Link Sandal" did not match any products."

I think your site would look better if you move the banner higher up the screen. It takes too much space above the fold and looks too cluttered at the moment. Just a suggestion.

Probably this. Too many links for a new site. It will come back anyway unless it's deindexed or you're notified by Google Webmaster tool.

So having a lot of Amazon affiliate links will not affect rankings at all?

    Hi cooler1 - I appreciate your review

Yes that's the keyword I'm targeting.

I analyzed my first page competition quite a bit before diving in, and for keywords with similar search quantity I felt like the competition isn't very optimized in this case. I spent about a week analyzing before buying the domain and committing.

Maybe you're right about the Google dance. But I have never ranked even in the first 1000 search results. I noticed GoogleBot crawling me every few days, but still no luck ranking at all. Is it normal to go a month without receiving any type or ranking? I'm indexed, just not ranking.

I double checked all the links on that page and they work for me. Maybe it's a problem of countries. I'm using an Amazon link localizer plugin, and an American proxy. What country are you in?

    Thanks again for your review!

it doesn't look like your site was de-indexed. it's probably not ranking for any of the keywords you're after.

if i enter this search query in google: site:greendress.info, google lists 40 results. thus, your pages are still in their index.

also, using yahoo explorer, i only see 2 backlinks to your domain. that may be due to your backlinks not getting indexed yet.

it doesn't seem to me that you were penalized. it seems like your site is just not ranking for your keywords.

you should continue to do more steady backlinking over a couple more weeks.

you might even have to backlink to your backlinks, as well... to get them indexed.

ClickPimpsta - Yeah it's true that I'm not banned. But I might be penalized however as you mention it might not be the case.

As for links there are about 50 Web 2.0s with 10,000+ comments supporting them. Hundreds of social bookmarks. 10,000 quality article links as well dripping, with about 200 new being indexed every day. But you're right, yahoo isn't picking them up however they are all indexed by Google when I check.

Maybe as another poster said, the quantity of links looked unnatural and Google is suspending them for a certain amount of time. I'll probably just have to continue building and wait for results then.

So far no one has reaffirmed my initial case that the affiliate links were bringing the site down. That's good news :-)

Yahoo site explorer is closing down soon. I heard they aren't updating backlinks anymore, so you might be better checking using MajesticSEO instead.

I hear a lot of people have problems with the link localizer plugin, so it maybe better if you create seperate links for each country, indicated by a country flag, instead of using the plugin.

When you ordered the backlinking service, did you ask them to build backlinks to the inner pages also and not just the main page?

I have two Amazon affiliate sites that I launched early October and they are dancing all around. They go from 7-10 to nowhere to be found and then jump back. I think it is likely that you are not penalized but rather just enjoying the big dance. One site that I launched in September has stopped dancing and is now ranking on page one at the #8 position and #9 position for my two main KW.

I am getting sales from on topic comments and answers regarding the products in the mean time while I wait for Google to rank my sites consistently.

Good luck and enjoy the dance!

You're right. I should go back and change all my links so as not to rely on the plugin. I'll do that once my site starts to rank.

Thanks for the info on Yahoo / Majestic I'll check it out.

The Web 2.0s are all pointing to different pages. One link pyramid with 11 2.0s are pointing to an inner page as well. But the 10,000 article links that are slowly being indexed are solely directed at the homepage.

What country are you in if you don't mind me asking?

Careful... never build too many links to new sites. But yes, you are dancing.

How long would a dance last? A couple months before finding a comfortable position? Is 3 months a good average?

      Not necessarily,

I believe that a new website can get such amount of links.

The rare 'best of the best' websites will get far more links than my site has in this time-frame.

But it is rare - so Google will be cautious. While I disagree on the quantity issue, I agree that consistency will provide evidential clout that Google needs to categorize a site as 'best of the best.'

I think for the amount of links I'm building, compared to my page-views it does look very unnatural. So well noted, and for sake of ease, I will try to implement a slower link-building campaign next time around.

So I would like to continue working on my site. Many people have identified the symptoms as part of the G-Dance disease.

What is the cure? Is it Time+Content?

Should I go ahead and implement the 20+ unique articles? Or does someone have a suggestion for a better use of my time to improve my site's performance?

Ideally you want the main page to be a static page instead of just a post, then have links to the posts for each product.

But it probably wouldn't be a good idea to change it now because the main page is already indexed.

Because you are trying to rank for a well searched term "green dress" I recommend you add more content to your main page because there isn't much on the main page at the moment. Plus you'll want to include LSI keywords so the content backs up the root keyword.

You should add the 20 unique articles, but not all in one go. Add them gradually, so Google see's it as fresh content.

I recommend you add a disclaimer also. You mentioned Amazon in the Privacy Pledge, but it doesn't have the text which Amazon says you need to have in their operating agreement.

The banner image is good, but it's too low down. I recommend moving it higher up the screen, so it looks more professional as all that white space isn't necessary.

Google likes video so if you can find some videos on the topic, you should embed them. Also this can help reduce your bounce rate and keep people on your site for longer.

Thanks, and I agree this is a better idea. For my next site I'll do it this way.

Right, I have been reading about 1000 words is a good average. As I add more articles, their clips will display on my main page and there should eventually be enough content.

You should add the 20 unique articles, but not all in one go. Add them gradually, so Google see's it as fresh content.
Sounds good, I'll add a new one each week.

I added that paragraph block Amazon requests in my 'About' section.

Ok - I deleted all the white space at the top as per your request. I agree it looks better now.

I search Youtube for the most popular fashion related video, took it, and embedded it as the first post on my website. I agree it's a good idea, thanks for that.

Thanks again cooler1 - excellent suggestions.

I would start adding in more unique quality content.

Also keep working on quality backlinks.

put your ads in an "IFRAME" or use Javascript - hides from search engines. Off page JS is best ; [engines can not see ANY code]
    OR
remove all ads; wait til indexed THEN re-add - ads. [Sniper techique]
Also ; cloak affiliate links ; Google looks for these.
Too many = "thin affiliate site".

    Lastly...
".info" domains have a negative standing sometimes in "Google's" eyes.

.com, .net, .org , .edu will ALL index faster and better in beginning.
Not a rule of thumb... just experience.

Might you have a tutorial / link as to how to put put my Wordpress links into off-page JS? I have about 400 affiliate links on my site being created with a WP plugin right now.
