A small blog network?

Hey all, I'm about to tackle a line of keywords and I've been reading a couple of the major discussions about blog networks and the such. I have read and understand most of it, at least I think I do - but I still need to ask the following because of an idea I have:

Would it be worth making 11 websites on the keywords I'm trying to target (all very similar keywords), essentially linking 10 of the sites to one more broad and competitive website? Is ten enough? If not, it might be too much work. If each ranks high for its own keyword and pushes the main site though, I can see it worth the time to throw 15 articles on each of the sub sites.

Secondly, Its been mentioned many times that each blog in your network should be on its own class C IP address. Is this because the link juice is reduced or solely because you're trying to protect the network? I 100% understand protecting your network, but it might not be as important if I'm doing a 10 site network as opposed to 100's or 1000's. Would I still generate the link juice I want if I hosted them all on the same IP address? (Currently using shared hosting with a dedicated ip).

Thanks in advance

If those sites have no PR pages no they would barely be a blip on the radar. I'm not a great fan of linkiing all your money sites together either. What thread were you reading that in that suggested that?

    To protect the network.

    Thanks Mike A.

I didn't read that specific advice in a thread. Actually, I know it IS generally frowned upon and that is why link wheels, etc came into being. I made what I think to be a false assumption that all that link wheel stuff was to pad against 1000's of links and that 10 blogs wouldn't be a big blip on the radar. I'm SURE Google can backtrack and figure things out, but would they really unless you're a power house which I'm not trying to be. My one competitor that is ranking in the more competitive kw's is blatently doing what I outlined, that is where I got that particular idea.

I agree with you on the PR stuff. I was hoping that each of the ten blogs could gain PR within a few months provided I did a good job on them. (content + quality backlinks) I've already made one site on the niche that captured PR3 pretty quickly. I know that is long term but I'm ok with that, it should pay for itself over time I think. The one attraction I have to doing all the work and waiting the time is the ability to have heavy SEO juice over the niche, allowing me to expand much easier and cheaper than others.
