Want opinions regarding domain names

Hi folks,

Those who know me know that I've been working for a number of years as a professional writer.

However, I recently decided to expand my horizons into building websites and doing SEO work since I know my way around Wordpress quite well and I also know quite a bit about SEO (I've been writing a blog on the subject for a client for over a year now and actually co-wrote a book on the subject).

Anyway, I went a little crazy buying up domains, especially with all the recent sales at Go Daddy and Namecheap. I now have five domains for my business:

One for the writing business
One for the SEO business
Two for the site building business
One overall (it's a more generic term which links all of what I do together).

I don't want to reveal the domains until I get them all set up properly.

Anyway, I'm now debating what to do with all these domains. I'm considering the possibility of creating a single website using the overall domain name and using the other domains to point to subpages. Or, I could create four separate sites and then have them all mentioned on the overall domain.

BTW, I also ended up with two for the site building business because I originally had thought about just offering to set up blogs (my expertise is in WordPress as I mentioned) and bought a domain specifically for that.

However, I decided that given that WP is flexible enough for all kinds of sites and I'll be installing the shopping cart plugin anyway, there's no reason not to offer to create static sites for things like ecommerce as well. So I registered another domain name for that (and all these are in addition to the six blog domain names I own which I do adsense on -- yes, it gets very confusing since I own more than a dozen domains, most of which are not yet developed).

I'm now debating whether to break those two sections into separate pages (i.e. one devoted to developing sites and another specifically to developing blogs) or if I should set up just one for site development and have the blog domain point to it.

I hope that all didn't sound too confusing. Anyway, what I want opinions on is this: set up a single site with the different domains pointing to subpages or set up four (or five) different sites, with links pointing to each other when I reference specific services? I do worry about doing this because it could look funny to Google's bots which may assume I'm trying to game the system. I also wonder if that would make things more confusing for potential customers.

OTOH, I have exact match three word domains for all the services (writer, seo, site builder and blog) while the overall domain uses the keyword "web" (also a three word domain) so it may be better from an SEO perspective to use my exact match domains (and yes, I know that there is quite a bit of controversy as to whether exact match matters or not, but it certainly can't hurt if I have them). Not to mention that I really love the SEO domain I found since it's really catchy and I was shocked it was still available, but if it points to a subpage on my main domain, it may not be as valuable...

Thanks for any and all advice.

Eric

Minga! It sounds like you are getting your interests in bed with one another and that's a good thing... and it sounds like you want to do some seo work for each of the domain names. Now that you have the domains, it's best to do something with them asap and not let them sit. If you want to build them each out, start small with just getting one page live on each site, and get each site live, templated and up and running. You are going to have to decide how you want to link them all together.

I don't see any major benefit of linking them all together though... It would make sense to me if all the keywords were related, to just use the keywords all on one website and then build that site out. The less amount of sites you have to manage the easier your life will be. so consider something like articlewriterweb.com/keyword1,kw2,kw3, etc. just as one site... then the question becomes what do you do with the other domain names...

Thanks for the suggestion. So you don't think I should even have all those other domains running? Ah well. I'll see. I do love the seo domain. The one I got for all the services is pretty good. They also are all linked in style (they all begin with the word "your"). I thought that would sound clever in order to make it clear that the services are related. I'll probably spend time this weekend getting the sites developed....

There's quite a few different ways you could go and obviously you'll get different opinions.

It's certainly not unusual to have a main domain and which links to separate but related domains (or sub-domains for that matter) for certain content, eg: support, services etc.

The more sites you have, the more maintenance you have, so if you don't mind the additional overhead of maintaining separate websites, then there's no real issue in doing it that way.

I possibly would condense a few of your domains though. Maybe just have the main domain and one or two for the business side of things.

Just remember from an SEO point of view, you'll effectively need to build backlinks to all your sites, so that also increases the amount of work needed.
