Hi

Just wondering if google weighs the type of backlink you get as well as its page rank.

So say you have a collection of back links all do follow. Both of them are on a page rank page of 3. If one is from a forum post, but the other is from a blog comment, and the other from a business directory will they all be of similar value?

Also I'm not sure if I buy into this whole idea of links from relevant sites. Is a backlink not just a backlink. For example a backlink in your signature on this forum wouldn't be relevant to many small local businesses but does that matter, really!?

You also have to consider how many external links each of those pages have. If site A has 40 external links and site B has only 5 external links, but both are PR3, site B would give you more link juice because it is sharing it's rank with less links.

A relevant backlink will absolutely have more weight than a non relevant link in most cases. That being said, non relevant links don't necessarily have an adverse effect either. If that were the case, we'd all be backlinking our competitor's sites to non relevant links and watching their rankings go down!

    Take care,

all backlinks are not made equal.

if you backlink from an authority site - it will be backlinking from a forum or blog or directory.

Do-follow backlinks are important to get good ranking position in SERP as well as page rank. However, it doesn't mean that no-follow links are worthless and not helpful for a website, infect both have their own importance.

There are literally hundreds of factors that Google takes into consideration about how much weight a backlink is worth to your website.

So no, not all backlinks are the same, each will carry different weight, not just on PR, relativeness, or type of link, but on hundreds of other things that you are probably not monitoring.

Just keep this links coming in on a consistent basis to build up link velocity and monitor how this affects rankings.
