Is a link pyramid better than a flat structure?

I know that a link pyramid can allow for more dangerous backlinks (for example you can xrumer blast the pages that are several tiers away from your money site). But I don't really use those risky tactics anyways.

so to maximize my link value, would it make more sense to just create links directly to my money site? Or am I missing something?

    You are not missing, the best way is to create links directly to your site.
    but the effective way is to use the above suggest methods on pyramid system

    for that you can search the forum for pyramid technics (and i don't mean "xrumer" and similar).

    Instead of building flat backlinks which are the way they are when you build them, the goal is to build a pyramid in order to give some juice to tiers of links

      The pyramid is better but you have to make sure that you're not blasting any links to any tier.....the logic that says these links are junk so i wont point them to my site directly but i'll blast 10000's of then to tier 2/3 makes no sense at all.

      stay away from blasts & spun content while mixing in variety and you will avoid a lot of trouble

    You can look WSO's on this site for "niche targeted pyramid".
    the added value of this kind of pyramid is getting high quality back links with some connection to the topick of your site.

    Pyramids are definitely better! for example: Web 2.0 pages <= article submission <= blog comments and forum profiles... then social bookmark the whole thing! It's effective stuff.
