I would allow comments, but only if you moderate it, with comments being accepted, Google see that your site is popular and therefore helps gain popularity in search engines.

It`s a plus to have comments, but you have to be carefull with moderation. You don`t want to find your site full of spam posts.

You should allow comments, it the way your visitors will us to ask you something or say their opinion. Just moderate them as people before me said, you can choose which comments to be published to your page and you can delete those which are spam.

Allowing comments is better as that will give you some more content. But you SHOULD moderate it, otherwise your blog may filled with Spammers,

However, it is better to close comments after some times for each blog posts, which really saves time of you on moderating.

It depends on what type of site you have. I have comments open on my fitness site, but only in the /blog section. Regular articles/pages don't need comments.

    Moderate all comments.

Here's an interesting debate on ThinkTraffic about whether to allow or not allow comments on your blog:

Debate! Should You Allow Comments on Your Blog? Find Out What Two Remarkably Popular Bloggers Think

There's a For/Against from Pat Flynn and Everett Bogue...two bloggers with a ton of traffic. It's a pretty fascinating read...

There's also a bit of drama where Everett calls out ProBlogger/Copyblogger and Darren Rowse stops by to respond...more interesting stuff!

I cannot believe this.People would write general comments (comments which can be posted anywhere no matter of content) just to get backlinks.

Is it ineternet marketiting all about form and nothing about content?

I allow comments specific to the topic, these general coments I delete.

Should I allow backlinks too, or should I allow just backlinks from people who allow me to put my backlink to their post?

Yes, but as other posters have said, only if you moderate with an iron fist. I rarely let a comment slip by unless it provides true value, both to readers and search engines.

As others have said, best is to allow comments and moderate them so only relevant comments are posted. Google likes pages that real visitors like, and comments show that visitors are interested in your page enough to comment, but obviously spam comments decrease the focus of your page and are thus a bad idea.

Normally comment is an suggestion for your website or your post. So we need to know our user comments. Just use moderate to check..

Allow (moderated) comments if you have the time to check them. If not then allow Facebook comments. Less spammy that and you still get to benefit from discussions, connecting and maybe a bit of viral exposure.

It is unbelievable.Since I posted this thread I have more than 150 comments, and nothing related to the topic:all of them are just interested in backlinks and promotion of their products.

Is OM all about scam or there is quality supstance as well?
