Does anyone have any advice on finding the right balance between search volume and competition when choosing keywords to optimize for?

any suggestions would be appreciated!

    If you're talking about competition in Google keywords tool that's only for adwords but the higher it is the better your CPC usually is.

    Other than that there's no magic formula. If you find a keyword with no competition go for it

    If you find a keyword you think you can win go for it

    If there's a keyword you're not sure if you can get but are in love with it and the niche then go for it

    If it's impossible then it's probably not best to try but if you want to.... Go for it

    It's next to impossible to find the right balance between the search volume & competition. But in my opinion, you should go for the keywords with high exact search volume.

    If your search keywords volume is high then competition is high. I didn't get your question clearly but you can round around with Google Adwords tool, which will help you in these issues.
