Howdy guys,

We got hit pretty hard back in April for our main keyword and since then I've been employeed to sort this problem out.

I've removed 1000s of links to the site now and submitted 3 reconsideration requests that have all be knocked back.

On Friday I updated some on page tags and over the weekend we jumpped up a couple of rankings.

Today we have jumpped from #50 to #42 - I'm not sure we were affected by Panda but I'm just wondering now if there was a penguin refresh that was sent out too.

Anyone else noticed this?

Nope, didn't notice any such thing. I think it's a gradual process, so we don't know many things that Google is doing silently in the background.

I've noticed, not sure what I was doing wrong - obviously something. Just reading about on here and elsewhere what to do and what I've done. Still scratching me head!

I think you're doing it the right way.

You must simply de-optimize your onpage SEO, meaning rewrite your Title, Meta Description and delete completely Meta keywords.

Then make fresh content on your site.

    Ping your site.

    Then wait.

Where do you source that info from? Do you mean your targetted keyword you are trying to rank for shouldn't be in the post title?

Fresh content has nothing to do with Penguin.

@heft, I wonder what you mean when you say that the reconsideration requests "have all be knocked back". Do you mean the reply was "no manual action has been detected towards you site"? If so, there is no point filing more requests, just continue using ethical SEO methods to further improve your rankings.

@MaroshIS, the only thing I completely agree with is that it won't hurt to demolish meta keywords. Those are useless and may be actually giving away your keywords to competitors.

As for not using your keywords at all, that's just wrong. How are you going to rank then? Keywords in titles, copy, headings are what makes your site rank well, even after all the algorithm updates.

Moving from 50 to 42 is not a jump.

If you believe in penalties, then what, pray tell,
is the penalty other sites suffer when you replace
      them?

Yesterday an update started rolling. Some of you might be affected by it. Some of my sites also disappeared but I will just wait for the waters to calm down before freaking out.

My site jumped from 18 on 2 page to 4 on first page. But have to analyze the factors . I think contextual links and EDU links did the magic.

    Interesting,

The more I read about Penquin, the more confusing it is. lol I have been on top of Google's organic results for over a year, and wham, I made one update and I was lost in space, couldn't find where my sight went in Google, but it wasn't on first 50 pages where I looked.

What to do, I had gone through this with several other sites when Panda attack hit, but this one was my primary landing page, so this hurt big time. I didn't know what to do, but the only change I had made by adding another topical article, I decided to start there not knowing all the issues with Penquin at the time. Low and behold, I removed the last addition I had made and in two weeks I regained my number one listing. Was it the article I added, or was it simply coincidence with Penquin release?

Simply put, when these Google attacks hit, it is nearly impossible to know what they have changed, but millions of sites have been hit, including many of my less important sites which were dying anyhow. Blogs were hit hard, especially the typical templated deals that the guru's have been pumping for years. Blogging for bucks is dying as I see it, and with the attacks focusing on these replicated sites, I wouldn't waste my time on affiliate marketing anymore, time to move on.

    Success to all,

      Success to all,
But as Google is now penalizing sites for their backlinks with updates such as Penguin, doesn't that make it easier for affiliates to rank now as they aren't competing against loads of affiliates who are using push button backlink software to rank their sites high like previously?

Yes I am also getting some fluctuation in the site's ranking. But is it really the unnatural links ?? I thought that this unnatural link was a drama from google :|

If you were hit by penguin, would be very hard to bring back that site. A solutions does exist for recovering your rankings tho but its not through removing inks, building new links, filling for re-consideration, honestly those are just a waste of time and you are going to spend time doing all that without any results!
