Need advice on ranking higher

I will try keep this simple. My site is currently ranked number 4 on page one for its main search term. Its a wordpress site for a local niche, but is currently being beaten by the 3 top UK directories, freeindex.co.uk, thompsonlocal, and yell.

I need to know how to beat these three sites. I will not rest until I reach that number one spot. But so far all I have been doing is all I know. Creating content and creating backlinks. Although as my niche is so small its near impossible to get contextual backlinks. So I have simply been getting one Pr1 - 5 backlink through blog commenting every day for the last 6 months. However none of those three sites seem to have any external backlinks, so random blog backlinks don't seem to be the way forward right now.

What else should I do to beat these guys?

Just for reference, its a PR2 wordpress site with good on page SEO.

    Without looking at your link profile, it sounds like you need some link diversity. Blog comments can work well, but you need to differentiate your link sources. Try guest blogging for example. Don't get too focused on a local niche like "new york dry cleaners". There are plenty of ways to get relevant links for this niche. A quick example would be writing a guest blog post on "how to remove the toughest stains from your jeans."

    Tweak Title - or check if the snippet of your content shown in search results include the keywords you are targetting - if not enter the keyword in that portion of your content,if it is possible - wait for some time to see the results .

    Try some new ideas such as link pyramid with tiered structure shall help in ranking boost. Use unique posts on first layer.
