How many backlinks should i obtain per month?

I have a 3 years old site that was hit by penguin two months ago because of agressive link building. I am about to start a less agressive but more penguin-friendly link building campaign to recover my previous rank if possible.

My question is how many backlinks would you recommend to obtain per /month for a site with 12 internal pages? Any advice will be appreciated.

You misquote google, or you are just swallowing some line
      being tossed around.

Think logically. Google loves viral. You cannot control the
number of links you get. If you got a million, good, great,
desirable links in one day, google would love you.

It's not the number. Get as many good links as you can
      get.

There is no penguin friendly link building. It's the same
link building as it's ever been. Links not helping does
not mean they hurt. Google probably never even
saw nor cared about the links you are talking about.
      Why would they?

Why do people think their site's value will increase
if they decrease the number of links?

      This stuff is not magic.

i'm just talking about the links that i have control over. i can't wait other people link to my site naturally. that would take years. i don't know if i would live that long.

so i am revising my question here. how many backlinks i shoudn't build to prevent being penalized by google again ?

The answer would be 0. As in z-e-r-o.

Number one- Backlinks from weak website profiles (which would be where you would be linking to) don't pack as much of a punch, ranking wise anymore. It used to be you could placate this by going for volumes. Penguin kind of messed this up. To put it plainly, it doesn't work anymore.

Number two- When you get into adding backlinks yourself you start to fall into the slippery slope of anchor text deviations. Plus, your backlink profile will look like everyone else's that is doing the same thing as you.

My suggestion to you is start asking questions like what would it take for other websites within my market to link to me? Get some answers....then start building a network of people within your market and actually make friends based on mutual desires. From there, links will be earned.

          Ha!

That mindset is what will make you lose in the longrun.

          You want links, gain them.

Stop worrying about building links constantly and start writing content that people actually want to share.

It doesn't take years to gain links. You could create one single post that could potentially be shared all over the internet, it's all about what you do.

Depends on the niche. If hes in a SEO niche with no linkerati, it doesnt matter how good his site is, he wont get natural links or meaningful enough links to rank.

You "build good content and it will rank" approach is to passive. I hate it. It doesnt work and you are just parroting what Google and other white-hat guys say.

If he's in a competitive niche where there is any money people are fighting over, it definitely comes down to link building. Its sad, but its true, so your advice may or may not be helpful.

And what's so wrong with white-hat marketing?

Why does black-hat seo make more sense?

I get where you are coming from with your statement on links and all, but the fact is, he/she can build and build and build, and potentially destroy his/her rankings. Or put more effort into his site (while building traffic) and gain a lot more out of it.

The whole "build it an they will come scenario" doesn't work because there aren't people seeing that content. Relying strictly on the search engines in order to get traffic isn't long-term.

(which the OP is stating per-month which means he/she is going for longterm.)

There is nothing wrong with either.

It's just one takes forever and another provides results within days/weeks/months.

They are both strategies with various risks involved. I actually use both, i have longterm authority sites that get people coming back each day to consume content, i wouldnt dream of throwing aggressive links at this site. It has respect, authority, tons of great quality metrics etc.

But then at the same time i can create a single page on a blogspot.com subdomain, throw a ton of links at it and have it ranking page #1 in 2 weeks.

I also have friends who have had completely white hat sites wiped out by the latest updates. No one is immune. And the "churn and burn" strategy may be more viable than ever because so many innocent folks are going down at the moment. I know lots of people who have lost their high qaulity websites. I do my churn and burn website and look at the loss as "just a cost of doing business".

The only difference between me and a lot of people on here is they think Google is on their side if they play by the rules. Google doesnt care about anyone here.

                Anyway,

Both strategies can make money, neither is right or wrong. One might be a better long term viable business. But it doesnt make either right or wrong. I actually power my money sites with those short term sites and get links through other methods as well.

I actually think my solution is the best, because it gives you protection which ever way the Google algorithm goes.

That being said, unless your in it for the longhaul and cant wait months/years without seeing meaningful traffic from Google and can afford to do so (Even with the potential of it being wiped out for no reason)... then by all means, go ahead and create your white hat content site.

There is no number. Its not about the quantity really its more about the type of links and how natural they seem. If you can fake natural you can get away with tons.

There is no limit to get the backlinks per month or day it depends on how much work you have done and the backlinks must be quality links not links coming from low PR sites. The more you get the more you will rank better.

As long as you don't get the link via auto, it should be fine. I suggest do a guest posting to some relevant sites.

You can build as many links you can from quality sources. For eg.You write 100 guest posts on top blogs in your niche,It's going to be beneficial no matter how many you write in a month.
