When you submit articles to article directories, does your backlink point to your home page or to the page where your original article exists (if you haven't rewritten it)?

Also, do you guys submit to free directories or do you pay a fee?

    Hey thurr

Your back link points to whatever page you link to.

Places like EzineArticles only allow for top level domains..

so it would have to be yoursite.com only.. some others allow you to submit different pages, but usually I go for the top level of a domain when using EzineArticles and then focus on other pages from sites like Squidoo, HubPages and other directories

    Peace

I guess what I was asking is what page should it point to, your home page or the page where your article is? Does it matter to a search engine?

    yes it matters.

create keyword optimized posts and create backlinks to your posts with the keyword in the anchor (try to vary your keyword otherwise Google knows you're trying to bomb it).
Also create backlinks to your homepage of course. But if your blog only has backlinks to its homepage, you'll be ranked lower.

It's best to have a good mix of both. Link to your homepage, product pages (if you have any) specific article pages - as many places as you can think of!
