Picking a niche - how to study competion

Im going to take the plunge into setting up my first niche website.
Its a 3 keyword phrase that I can get a keyword-keyword-keyword.net EMD for.

It has 165,00 exact match searches in G keywords tool, but it says competition is high.

My aim is to get 1st page in google by writing unique and helpful content daily.

For refernce when tying in google my phrase of keywords the first 3 google results are:
1. A partial EMD website - only has 5 pages - PR5 - No backlinks

2. You tube video

3. PR5 website without a EMD at all - 2004 backlinks


What is your method of studying competition before choosing your niche?

    Also on Market.S it shows the SEOC 2,130,000 is this just too much competition to take on?

    Competition analysis has become more of an instinctive thing for me! I do not use any tools (except a backlink checker)... I just look at the number and type of backlinks of the top 3 sites, the onpage optimization of those sites and from there I can gauge how long it will take me to beat them.

    Is the search volume 165 000 or 165 00?

    Do not worry about the "high" competition in the KW tool as it is reflective of Adword's competition and not SERP competition.

    It is impossible for most people to rank number one by just writing quality content... it can happen if your stuff goes viral but even then the links you get are not going to be specific to the KWs you are targeting. You going to have to build links to get the ball rolling and to rank for the KWs you have chosen.

    I highly doubt that the site in the first position has no links! The only way it will become a PR5 site is if it has links with PR pointing to it!

    Youtue videos are relatively easy to beat!

    You will need to look at the site's anchors (the one with 2004 links) to see if they are optimizing for the KW you selected... if they are then you will have your work cut-out for you (depending on the quality of the links).

    Take the plunge... that's the only way to learn!

    What's the PR of the youtube video? If it's a PR1 - PR2 video it could be an indication of medium competition and you could rank above that with some work. If it's a strong PR4-PR5 you may be looking at 3-4 months of work to outrank that.
