  • What Kind Of Sites Were Hit Hard By The EMD Update?
So – what kind of sites were hit hard? During my investigations, I observed the following recurring
patterns. Additionally, these patterns were supported by data from Matt Hepburn's set of sites as well as
the sites that are owned by clients and for which I provide SEO services:
    • Sites whose home page EMQ ranked were hit by the EMD Update if the home page was overoptimized
    – the title contained the search term, the search term was in the meta tags, the H1,
H2, and H3 tags, and so on. Also, if the keyword density of the search term was over 2.0%, the
site was nearly always also hit by the EMD Update.
    • Sites with more than 60% of all links pointing at the EMQ ranking home page were hit
especially hard. Having a large percentage of all links pointing to the home page and very few
links pointing to each of the other pages of the site seems to be used by Google as a key signal
for abuse of the EMD boost.
    • Sites with more than 40% of all links being dofollow also were hit by the EMD Update. This
may very well be an indication of a test Google is implementing now for the EMD Update, if it
is found to be effective in improving the search results, this factor may in the future be applied
to all sites ranking for a search term, not just EMQ rankings.
    • Sites with ten or fewer indexed pages and that EMQ ranked were also hit by the EMD Update.
This may simply be a coincidence, since Google is already actively reducing the ranking of
smaller sites designed to rank for only one or a few keywords.
    • Finally, sites were hit by the EMD Update if they had more than 30% of all back links carrying
EMQ anchor text or anchor text containing a strongly related LSI keyword. This also was a key
indicator for a site-wide EMD Update penalty.
Just for clarification, “being hit by the EMD Update” means that the site lost ranking of at least 10
positions (e.g. dropping from page one to page two or further) for a majority of the tracked terms.

Dialling back the importance of exact match domains, despite only effecting 0.6% US English search terms, will still have a strong impact in the Retail, Travel, Gambling and Finance verticals.

This is simply due to a higher proportion of exact match domains with sufficient supporting SEO having strong visibility in these channels.

I have one EMD website that I got for the purpose of testing and I can say I was not affected at all. In fact my website moved from #4 to #3.

However my websites are not built using extra optimized articles that contain vague and useless information on the subject. What do I mean by that? For example if I go for the keyword "minecraft crafting guide" I will make a good looking, easy to navigate website that actually contains the full updated crafting guide.

When I work on a website I always think about the people that search for that keyword and I do my best to provide the best quality information I can. Keeping my websites organized with more than a few pages of information helps me having a low bounce rate and a good % of returning visitors on all of my websites.

This way I was never affected by any of the Google updates over the past year.

I would say build a strong link profile. This is how it has always been. If a site has a strong link profile from reputable sources, it will never worry of any Google update.

Re: EMD, (to add to your list), domains with dashes (2 or more) are most likely the ones that got hit hard with this update too.

i agree with this.. established sites dont have to worry about updates made by Google.... try to search cdc in Google.com ... or world war 2 .. and u will see the results of what EMD really trying to do..

Not yet. EMD is not only for EMD's. It is for people who are ranking through EMD only but have crappy contents on them.

yes you have a point on that.. and also, sites that has less than 10 pages with exact match keyword on their URL is surely affected.. squeeze pages, sales pages, are the most affected ones.. if you have this kind of pages, better have it on a sub domain and have a rich-page domain or website.. if i have a right term..

the only way to do that, is to contact the webmaster or owner of the site where you left your blog comment.. and dont worry about much those cuz GOogle started to devalue spammy links.. links that are unnatural..

My site Toyota Hilux Vigo 2013 2012 New 2011 2010 2009 2008 Minor Change Toyota Vigo Thailand Toyota Fortuner Nissan Navara 4x4 Pickup Truck Dealer Exporter SUV Thailand Australia NZ UK Dubai Dealer was on number 1 in most "Toyota Hilux Vigo" and "Toyota Hilux" related searches as "Toyota Hilux Vigo Thailand", "Toyota Hilux Thailand", Toyota Hilux Australia, Toyota Hilux Dealer, Hilux exporter, Toyota Hilux 2012.

When the EMD update hit I was thrown on page 2 and 3 on most these searches. My traffic was down to 25% of its original traffic. Then three days later I started crawling back up. Now I' back to 50% of original traffic and between 7 and 20 on searches. I will rewrite articles to reduce keyword load and see if that make a difference.

I doubt its the ONLY negative factor.

But Warrior Forum is about internet marketing. Not cars.

I personally am in the car industry as well with my father. And we have ranked dozens of sites and are ranking on the front page for nearly all of our keywords so I would like to say I know what I am talking about when it comes to car websites.

Feel free to shoot me a pm and I can show you our sites.

So now the new rule is that 100% of links have to be topic-relevant? That's going to really hurt sites like Amazon.com and YouTube.

Now YouTube is going to have to get 100% of its backlinks from related Video Sharing websites or their rankings are going to drop.

We are not talking about linking to a powerhouse website like Amazon or Youtube.

We are talking small time in comparison an irrelevant links will and do hurt rankings.

Unless your doing a tier system. In which case screw it.

Only google knows best; how much effective EMD update. But what I found if your site content is original than EMD update is good for you. In the long run what I see that some spammers just purchase Exact Match Domain & post some duplicate content regularly to rank in search engines. Google just remove those domain from their record. But if our site contain unique original content than Exact Match Domain certainly good for us.
