This is just a bit of know-how for newbies and the like really. You can try and rank for all the high traffic keywords all you want, but if it isn't targeted you're not going to make much.
You need super targeted keywords where the visitor is already late on in the buying cycle.
For example, a recent site project of mine targeted buyers a long way down the buying cycle. It got only 8 unique visitors yesterday, yet it made $56.
If you can get people who already want the product, all you have to do is tell them to go and get it.
A few examples of these keywords are:
buy 'product'
purchase 'product'
cheap 'product'
'product' best price
Those aren't the best keywords for this example, but do some research, test it out and you'll see how powerful it can be. Understanding buyer psychology is a key element of internet marketing.
