Below are my thoughts on the recent penguin 2.0 update. Cliffnotes are:
  • Google probably lumped several updates together
  • Blog networks deindexed
  • SEnuke links devalued most likely (Web 2.0 still fine)

lol... I read your article on how you got hit and in essence you are now going to build quality content....

so nothing has changed.... build a site for the user and answer their questions with good quality content...

Oh and the backlinks need to be natural looking (at least)

Well im gonna get more prolific about it.

      Before my strategy was basically:

      - Outsource content
      - Link build.

      Now its more:

      - Build tonnes of quality content
      - Outsource tonnes of quality content
      - Set up my site well.
      - Minimal link build/strategic links.

Yep thats the way I have been building one of my sites recently and its working a treat... no need to link build just adding great content has been working nicely :-)

Content creation is a chore though so have been outsourcing a fair mount as well :-)

I have been using buzzbundle as well to get some good social content :-)

I think you got a great point there.

The onsite optimziation should be an important basis, something like the foundations of a building. The offsite optimization or link building as some would call it should be use to get you the competitive advantage.

Surely if you have great content your site will eventually get shared naturally but if you prefer to expedite the process because waiting isn't fun, using offsite promotion can seriously give you an advantage.

What we have generally like to do is use social promotions to get a good boost; whenver we're building any offsite links we try to find links that not only credit link value but also publize the site in that way you "kill two birds with one stone"

This has worked very well till date.

Here is what I observed from my sites, all my niche sites gained or stayed the same in traffic. And that was with mediocre content...just keyword stuffed. Never built any links to those sites.

My not-for-profit general discussion site, with content written by scholars went from 1,400 visitors a day down to roughly 500 (lost traffic on the 7th of May and on Penguin day).

I’ve only done 15 (roughly) unnatural links to the general discussion site upon promoting the site. Only the home page got slapped the hardest because of two keywords I was targeting. Went from page 1 to 380. Like I said, that was from building roughly 15 links! That homepage still ranks good for other keywords though.

That site has hundreds of pages, seems those pages lost traffic to sites directly related to the topic, from authority sites or from keyword stuffed pages like twitter feeds.

I also had a page that went viral way back, got great PR from it. Google stripped away the PR and left it at PR NA? Slapped it so hard I can’t find it! WTF?

So, I guess that says...I’m still lost when it comes to SEO. Guess your better off just avoiding it all together.

I'm ranking sites with one-page of content. I'm also ranking sites with 30 pages of great content. Content means nothing. I'm much more interested in how Google's own metrics affect our rankings, such as Bounce Rate and total time spent on site - as I believe these are beginning to outweigh factors such as links - although I believe that it takes Google at least several months to have enough statistics to truly determine how well a site performs (depending on the total visitor count, obviously).

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

Bounce rate and time on site are meaningless in the SERPs. I have a site that gets incredible numbers for both and would be #1 if that were a major factor, so don't worry so much about that for SERP rankings.

    Interesting stuff.

Funny thing is my site got hit a little bit too. Not too bad, just went down a page. Killed all traffic though.

But interesting thing with my stuff is that my test spam page is ranking like crazy.

Why? Who knows? But I think the penguin was a little ways off it's mark, I think blog networks have a lot more to do with it then you'd think. and I think over optimization.

Otherwise SEO link building seems to work pretty good.

There is news that says this Penguine 2.0 affected only 2.3% US sites. These kind of Google updates are actually helping people to visit quality websites.
This update brings new feature to all its users, now you can directly complain to Google about spam sites.
If you find any sites in SERP, is said to spam and good in rankings then you can report to google about it. So that Google will manually check that site about spamming.
