Hi guys,

I just had a question

What is the most accurate and most detailed piece of software/service for analyzing top 10 search engine competition for a keyword - that works effectively in 2013.

I know Market Samurai's and Traffic Travis's SEO competiton tools are popular choices, but I wanted to know if there are other more effective and detailed tools out there, so you have the best idea of which keywords you could rank for...

Really look forward to your replies on this..

  • I was in your boat a few months ago and not one of the software packages out there beat installing SEO quake on Chrome/Firefox and looking at the front page in Google. Its free to

  • Thanks, will check that out,...I have heard SEOMOZ's and SEMRush Competition analysis tools mentioned around as well, do you have any experience with them?
  • Analyze backlinks using Ahrefs or Majesticseo.
Analyze their content and think, can you produce something better etc..

    • I only check backlinks after I have analyzed the the top ten using Seoquake. Saves a whole lot of time. Theres no reason to do backlink checks on PR N/As , PR zeros and sometimes even PR1s. I mean you could but theres only so much time in a day.

  • On the topic of analysing top 10 competitors backlinks am I right in saying that

The number of backlinks pointing to a competitors site page is not as important as the quality/authority of those backlinks, and the anchor text of the backlinks, as a page may have many backlinks, but most are not attempting to help rank for the keyword you want, as the anchor text is not the same....

    Is that right?
  • WebMeUp analyzes SEO performance (yours and competition) by a range SEO factors and builds side-by-side graphs to visualize the data obtained.

In addition to the SEO factors below, the 'Competition Research' module in WebMeUp allows discovering competitors' keywords and backlinks, plus checking and tracking their rankings.

  • I usually run a pretty large list of keywords through Traffic Travis to get a rough estimate. Then, the ones that look promising, I'll dig it a little deeper and do some research on individual sites.

One of the main things I try and do is identify as many of the backlinks as possible from the sites in the top 10. Then, see if I can get links from these sources as well.
  • I've used Market Samurai for this for quite a while...
  • Yep I second Mike's opinion of installing SEOquake and looking directly at page 1 results in google itself, nothing is quicker to see what type of authority is on page 1...
