I'm trying to create a Best website optimization & SEO practices for a new wordpress site and I'm curious to understand the difference between Keywords and Tags as they affect SEO.

I understand keywords and how they impact SEO but exactly are Tags and do they have any bearing on SEO?

Also do I even want to use Tags?... or I should probably have asked - Why would I want to use Tags?

I usually add keywords that is not able to go in the post.

An example could be. Your are writing about "blue widgets" and you also want to target a long tail keyword that is "blue widgets kids sale", this is not good to put in the article because it does not sound very good.

Put that in the tags, that way you keyword will appear on the site.
I like to make my tags noindex, because you if you dont do that you will end up with a lot of duplicate content on your site if you have multiply tags in an article. This works very well.

    Hope it helps you.

You don't need Tags for traffic or SEO.

    Use Categories, keep it simple.

    Tags are a waste?

A lot of searches return results with tag pages, which in turn funnel visitors to various content pages. If we just used a primary category I think you'd lose out. In both usability and SEO.
