Hi,

I've recently relaunched a niche similar to that I sold on some years ago. My old site was generating over 1000 visits a day (https://flippa.com/auctions/63707/attachments/67283.png).

My new site has been picked up by google and for my 2nd choice keyword analytics and webmaster tools is reporting I'm ranked 68th (even though I can't find it).

My question is, as well as content (which I have scheduled in quite a few frequent blog posts, targeting my keywords) - what else works? how do I go about link building in 2013? previously on older sites it was just more a less spam links on any old site. Due to the nature of my site, other webmasters think my claims are false (free apple products, from referrals) and are hesitant for me to guest blog.

A lot of the stuff I'm reading about link building and SEO in 2013 seems like I'm reading a sales letter to buy their services.

Does anyone have any honest information? can I get by, by simply writing content and hoping google pickup my website?

Well, it's pretty hard to just ask backlinks for notdisclosingtheniche.com or whatever your site is.

    Therefore I suggest you to:

Add your site to niche directories
    Write guest posts
Run a "competition" that makes your site viral
    Get links through review/testimonials
    Make linkable assets (http://backlinko.com/skyscraper-technique)
Ask your friends to link to you
Create a small private network of niche related sites
You can do e-mail outreaching as well.
    Broken linkbuilding
    Analyze your competitor links

    etc.

    Hope that helps.

I really like the linkable asset idea, thanks for taking the time. My competitor only has backlinks from a signature in a related forum, same as me just has a lot more posts.

I don't see how you can rank a site in today's market without some serious backlinking unless it's not a competitive term.
