Now that the Google keyword tool is no longer available to the general public, below are given some alternatives:

KeywordDiscovery.com
Keyword Combiner (this is not keyword research tool, but is helpful for sorting your keyword lists)
The Free Keyword Tool from WordStream - Free Keywords for SEO, AdWords, & Blogging (this is an awesome tool to get hundreds of long tail keywords related to your niche)

Hope you find this information useful. Google Keyword tool may still be free for advertisers, but you need to set up an Adwords account.

TrafficTravis is also a good alternative... BTW, I always use Market Samurai to investigate keywords. Those free keyword tools are good, but...

  From which source does Market Samurai fetch its keywords? I don't think it has its own database but fetches keyword data from Google or some other source. Anyone know what its source is??

Where is MS fetching its data now? Or TT, for that matter. I'm assuming that they're all migrating to the new Keyword Planner? If so, why not just go straight to the source and use it instead?

I don't understand what is the big deal about GKT being taken down. You just need to signup for Adwords in order to access Keyword Planner.

Market Samurai and Keyword Winner (Wordpress plugin) are my Google Keyword Planner alternatives. I may also consider Wordtracker as well.
