Will they both work just as well for articles/adsense? I'm familiar with wordpress, but was just looking around at blogger and wondering why that wouldn't work as well - then wouldn't have to buy a domain, etc?

Blogger and WordPress will both work well for articles, but Blogger is better for Adsense than WordPress.com. With WordPress.org you can do anything you like.

This article reviews some of the differences:

Here's my side-by-side comparison from a while back: Niche Blog Hosting: Wordpress vs. Blogger

The bottom line is that Blogger works well for niche blogs, better than some around here would lead you to believe (no, as long as you're not spamming and you're paying attention, you blog won't be deleted). There are some distinct advantages to self-hosted WordPress as well that make it a better choice for a flagship blog though.

Blogger does not allow you to create a ping list. They only allow weblogs.com in addition to Google's own blog directory. That's why many of my users at King Ping are from blogspot.com

With wordpress hosted on your own host, you got more control. Blogger is one way operated and you can only create posts and even more posts.

Wordpress creates pages in all different ways and the plugins are just amazing. Plugins from Wordpress alone should already convey you to use Wordpress instead of Blogger.

    Hi,

My piece of advice is go with wordpress if you are going host your own domain othewise blogspot is better because of it's user friendliness.

Wordpress.org is best of all specially when it comes to customising. However if you looking for free ones, then blogger seem best.

If you want a long term and serious blog then go with selfhosted wordpress. Otherwise either blogger or wordpress.com is very quick to set up and should work fine.

There seems to be quite a mixed bag of thoughts on this. Thanks for the responses. I am currently using self-hosted Wordpress for a couple of blogs, and it's working out 'ok'. I'm just not very familiar with php so I've been a little hesitant installing themes and the plug-ins that aren't auto-installed.

And yes, it's true - the blogger one can be up and running in about a minute. That's what originally sparked my curiosity about them.

I suppose I'll stick with the self-hosted wordpress.

    Thanks for opinions.

Plenty of hosts out there, some as low as $10 a year - one click install of Wordpress and you have a self hosted blog and all the power that comes with it. Don't want to spend money on a domain right now... look at a generic domain to begin with and use subdomains (again, very easy to set up in cpanel).
