Be Careful with Bookmarking

I just wanted to relate some of my experiences with bookmarking sites.

I use wordpress and I purchased the AutoSocialPoster plug in

Once I had all of my accounts set up it would automatically post to all the book marks sites that it was set up for...I even would manually bookmark to sites that this plug in would not work with...in short I would go bookmarking mad and put my link on approx 40 bookmark sites for every post I made...

Well after a month or 2 of this, my site started to die...I had lost over 80 of my traffic....to make a long story short I went to the Google Webmaster Forums to get someone to look at my site and maybe give me some advice as to what may have happened....

Well one of the things that I discovered is that I had created a ton of duplicate content because I never diversified my descriptions and titles for each "block" of bookmarkings I did for a given post...This is what I had been told by some high ranking forum contributors

I was also told that back links for bookmarking sites regardless of their page rank is pretty much considered neutral by Google. That is it doesn't really help with your rankings...yes it will give you some traffic, but that's about it

I am not totally blaming bookmarking , because I had some other issues that contributed to the problem....

However I have since stopped using the AutoSocial Poster plug in , and I do all my bookmarking by hand as to diversify my descriptions and titles

I also know which of the bookmark sites give me the most traffic so I only focus on those as well

Just relating my experince

I am very sure it is not about duplicated content/bookmarking.
Your website content is unique isn't it?
The duplicated content (snippets) are found on OTHER websites, not yours.
And, Google definitely recognize your website as the original one.

I'd say your ranking may just dropped temporarily, it's common with google especially if your site is still new.

Big Mike's SocialBot allows for unlimited rotating of your title and description if you choose to do so. Last I knew (about a month ago) warriors could get it for $7.00!

Don't have the link right off hand but a quick search of "socialbot" here at WF could remedy that.

On your site, here's hoping the issue is as AlfredKo say a temporary problem.

It's called Google sandbox. Look it up and read about it.

Social Bookmarking does not do any harm to your rankings. Unless you overuse it like you did and got too many links in a short period of time.

Lots of links in a short period of time isn't a problem. And the duplicate content penalty thing is completely misunderstood. I agree with bgmacaw, if I wanted to hinder a competitor I'd tell you exactly what they told you.

If I wanted to harm newbie competitors I'd tell them what those "high ranking forum contributors" told you, ie the same old canards about social bookmarking not working and duplicate content on multiple domains being a problem.

Yes, its very important to vary your descriptions. You have to imagine all the different ways that a real visitor to your site would write a description if they were bookmarking it. Makes sense really.

Thanks for the post but i never had bad experience with bookmarking.
I doubt if Alfred was right at his point that you were trying to bookmark/submit duplicate content or using the same matter on each and every site so that it gets duplicated on bookmarking websites. You need to be really careful and clever as well while bookmarking so hope you try it in a different manner next time and keep us updated about it.
    Thanks

Ya man, you are correct. While bookmarking we have to use different tags, descriptions and etc. But we can maintain the title name as the same....
