Backlinks to where....

I've recently started a backlink campaign as I realised that I hadn't ever actually bothered to build any and I've now hit a small issue ....

Should backlinks be going to either the www. version or non www. version of my website? My analytics and website both show for the non www. version but I'm wondering if it needs to be that specific when I'm dropping the links to show and help?

Most of my backlinks have come from my old website which has a redirect in the htaccess file, just to add to the confusion even more.

You need to decide on one or the other. Don't use both.

    Hi wrdmrn,

www. and non www. versions are completely different domains. You need to use just one of them.

Don`t use both cos google will take one of them as duplicate content, just make a redirection one of them to another.

It does not matter which version you choose, but you need to choose one version and redirect the other one using 301 permanent redirect.

hi there, i just used the redirect tools in my cpanel to make a permanent redirect.

Personally I would set the site up on non-www and build all links to non-www

Old sites may already be set up on WWW versions

Use only one version of your URL to promote. and redirect the other URL to avoid the leakage of SEO link juice from the existing backlinks.

Choose only one of them. If your tools already said that it goes to your non-www ones, then redirect your www URL to the non-www. Don't send it to both, because it will just divide the points you get for each backlink and it will alert Google for duplicate content and you will get penalized.

It's best to stick to the www. version. It's however not an big issue. But you need to stick to only one of them.

    I think you'd better 301 the non www.version to www.version and backlinks the www.version
