Twitter update: Find out what's trending – but discover why it's trending too

I found this article on Search Engine Journal to be an interesting read. Twitter is going to begin providing more context around trending topics on the platform. Apparently, that's a response to the fact that millions of users ask on a regular basis why specific topics are trending. Twitter plans to address that adding a pinned tweet and description next to trending topics:

The idea behind the update is that the right tweet will not provide instant enlightenment to Twitter users and answer questions about why something is trending before the get asked. Twitter is calling the pinned tweet a 'representative tweet', but not all trends will get one. The system will run by a combination of human curators and an algorithm. Search Engine Journal posted a screenshot of representative tweets in place:

The new system certainly does make it immediately evident which trends are getting the most attention on the platform - which should be a useful tool for anyone marketing via Twitter. Descriptions won't get added as quickly as representative tweets are set to appear - but they're on their way:

  • This is a great news. Based on these stats we can also plan our topics and type of posts for better engagement. I am searching more information about this, will share my findings.
  • ok, I have a few questions about that!
    1. Will Twitter Algorithm realize that if we are using the most trended hashtags then it is going to ask us in advance to write a representative tweet?
    2. Or the idea is totally dependent on the post overall (including caption, hashtag, and image as well)
    3. Will we have to make two tweets for a single post such as; the one with original content and the other one with representative content?
  • That's pretty awesome. So let's focus on specific topics to get more reach or visitors. I should read more about this topic.

Twitter plans to address that adding a pinned tweet and description next to trending topics: "Throughout Twitter, we've been working to bring people more context on what's happening with labels on Tweets and accounts as well as curated pages (aka Moments) and related articles on trends. To help with this, we're adding pinned Tweets and descriptions on trends to help explain why something is trending."
