You can follow people by searching for hashtags and keywords and hope that they will follow you back. You can try out twitter directories. Just try and be relevant. You'd be better off starting a blog and generating content to share rather than quotes and such as there are just so many of those and most are considered spammy/bots.

The best strategy on Twitter is to follow users that are in the same niche as you. Try to engage any that respond or thank you for following them.

As you build up your followers (it will take some time), post useful tweets, re-tweet anything you think is useful and try to be as active in the community as possible.

I would stay away from buying followers. Everyone was a new user once so you shouldn't have too many people afraid to be the first to follow(plus you only need follower to be the first). One thing I've found helpful is to follow users that don't already have a ton of followers. They will be more likely to follow you back and engage with you.

So I have read the whole thread and you have gotten some great tips here. I think what you're is great. Follow first, and keep up those conversations. Participate in the community, and build a reputation. Followers will start rolling in.

Since you're building your account for a bigger net, you plan to support your blog. Why just use twitter for promotion. Why don't you utilize all social media platforms? I think you'll get access to more people that way. There are so many software for managing multiple social media accounts now, so I don't think it should be too difficult to handle.
