AdRoll - Stay Away From AdRoll?

A lot of advertisers who come to AdRoll get started with retargeting with Google's remarketing program. Google's remarketing is a great way to get started and to learn how effective retargeting can be as a remarketing channel. A lot of advertisers come to AdRoll to take their retargeting program to the next level. Today Im going to talk a little bit about why you might want to move from Google remarketing to a dedicated retargeting program such as AdRoll.

The number one reason you might want to move to AdRoll is inventory. If you run a remarketing campaign through Google's remarketing program, you're stuck with Google inventory. Google has some good sites and some bad sites. If you have a fixed budget, you don't have access to all of Google's inventory because they have a lot of sites, so what ends up happening is you end up on some good sites and some bad sites. That's an okay way to get started. When you're going to optimize your campaign and take that ROI to the next level, you're going to want to cherry pick the best performing sites from all the inventory you could have available to you. AdRoll is integrated with 30+ inventory sources. Their platform helps you spend your fixed budget and cherry pick just the best performing sites from platforms such as Google, Microsoft, and 30+ others and bring that fixed budget into one campaign. Having more inventory to optimize off brings a better performing campaign overall.

Now let's go over another benefit of choosing AdRoll over Google remarketing. One of the most powerful optimization levers that we see in a retargeting campaign is segmenting your audience. People who go through different areas of your site should be exposed to different marketing messages and some people you might not want to target at all. With Google remarketing it's very difficult to do. To execute that properly with Google remarketing, for every segment that you create, you need to go to Google, pick a pixel, go into your CMS for your site, and finally place that pixel onto the pages you want to create that segment for. That's a very laborious process and it doesn't allow you to make changes and adjust segments very easily. AdRoll has developed a single pixel solution. All you need to do is place one pixel across the footer of your entire site and then you can go into the AdRoll interface to specify words that appear in the URL you want to create a segment for. That way AdRoll makes it easy for you to match ads to your budget. An increase of your ROI can be anywhere from 30-60% when you create segmented, retargeted campaigns vs. retargeting everyone the same way. These facts are just a few reasons why retargeting with AdRoll is far more effective than Google's retargeting program. Check them out today and bring your campaigns to the next level.

There's been a lot of hype in the industry about AdRoll. They claim that they do a better job than Google AdWord's retargeting program. You might've stumbled upon this article to do a bit more research on AdRoll and whether their service is right for you and your company, or if it's just another over-hyped program online. I'm going to start off by saying that AdRoll is a very reputable company and their customers have stated that their ROI's have increased substantially after using AdRoll in their campaigns. How do they actually do a much better job than any of their competitors? Well today I'm going to be talking about what happens behind the scenes when AdRoll actually serves retargeting impressions. The AdRoll platform is all about helping you understand the behaviors of different users on your site and targeting your marketing to them accordingly. Let's look at how all this works behind the scenes.

As you know it starts with AdRoll's smart pixel. Because AdRoll uses a smart pixel it means that you only have to paste the same code across all pages of your site. That will let AdRoll collect data on your users. Some users will bounce off your homepage, some users will look at certain products, some users will purchase, others won't, and so forth. All of the data is collected by AdRoll's smart pixel and goes into the data warehouse. That lets AdRoll determine how valuable different users are to you and what products to show them when we see them later on. When a user visits a webpage and an ad impression is on that page, AdRoll can respond in real time, within 15 milliseconds with a bid and an ad to show that user. That impression goes back to AdRoll they can look up in the data warehouse based on the different behaviors that user took on your site, how much to bid on that user.

Let's say a user is calculated to be worth $2.00 CPM to you. You might bid $1.00 and someone else might bid $0.50. In this case, you're the higher bidder for this impression. This is called the second price auction – you only pay one penny more than the next highest bid. In this case you'll only pay $1.01 CPM for this impression. AdRoll can also determine, from the products they looked at, the best products and offers are to make to that user when they render the ad unit. This is just a simple outline of behind the scenes of serving a retargeting impression through the AdRoll platform. Hope this helped you understand a little more on how AdRoll works.

This is inaccurate: you can just as easily segment your audience by URL with AdWords remarketing, and I believe the platform's had this capability for a couple of years. You should be placing your AdWords remarketing code on every page, or better yet creating remarketing lists in Analytics, which gives you a little more functionality (you can create remarketing lists based on number of pages visited, time on site, and other goals). But even just using AdWords, you can segment by URL visited.

Give happiness and you will end up happy.
