What are the advantages/disadvantages of installing WordPress in the root or installing it in a sub directory?

It really depends what kind of site you're building. For most cases I would recommend installing WP in the root directory, as it's better for branding and linking to tell be able to tell someone to go to ****.com rather than ****.com/blog/ etc.

However there are cases in which you would want to install a copy of WP into a sub directory. Like if you are creating a password protected members site, your sales pitch and join page could be in the root directory and then the WP site with all the content would be located at ****.com/members/

It is suppose to make a difference SEO wise, they say pages closer to the root do better.

    Just a thought

Like Alex said, it depends on what you doing. Also, for a membership site, most plugin's protect the pages, so you don't have to install in a sub folder. Well, works either way.

I prefer to install WP in a subdirectory to keep the root clean, however my website is served from the root such as (www.mysite.com)
This is easily done with a few small changes.
    Giving WP it's own directory

I have actually read about this and wonder how this is going to affect SEO. Any idea?

        It's not going to.

Where you put your core files is almost irrelevant.
WordPress is versatile and you can put the files most anywhere and still have your url be from the root.

        My typical flow is:
WP in a subdirectory, but url is the root. (like www.mysite.com)
        wp-content renamed and moved.
wp-config.php renamed and moved outside the server root.

I often have tracking software, help desks or some other directories in the root so it makes it easier to just keep it organized and clean.

The final url can be just about whatever you like and It doesn't effect seo.
Google doesn't give a crap where you store your files.

Well I always prefer to use Root for my CMS as it helps to create good and professional image for your website unless if you own big company then you might go for sub directory.

Why would you use a subdirectory if you can install it right into the root?

It keeps the root clean and organized.

Occasionally I'll have a client that has WordPress in the root and by having the newer redesign in a subfolder it allows me to do final testing without interrupting the main site.

When final testing is done, the index & htaccess can be moved and the old install deleted.

Much of the reason is personal preference. I like things clean, structured and organized.

    Root directort... Here's why.

Some viewers try viewing the root directory when you have anything setup in sub-directories, or on sub-domains. If there's nothing there, you're losing traffic.
