I am not a designer, only thing I can do is build a website in WP and do some basic coding.

I would like to show to people a portfolio of work however (don't have any at this time), I can outsource coding a brand site for few bucks. But I don't want pay for hosting.

Is it possible to somehow show the website to a potential client regardless?

Thanks

P.S. I am also thinking about wix

Run WP locally, take screenshots of site for client.

      Yup, this.

To be more specific, run something like XAMPP or WAMP and install Wordpress as you normally would.

There are guides to follow, for example this one - How to Install WordPress on your Windows Computer Using WAMP

Then pretty much go as normal, install you theme and build the site up.

If you want to give live portfolio for the website you have just follow these steps.

Take a free domain from - dot . tk

There are lots of free web hosting companies providing free web hosting for an year without any credit card. Try "000webhost"

Install whatever framework you want Wordpress, Joomla etc.

Thanks all for your suggestions! I have some experience with WAMP and from what I remember...... getting free domain and hosting seems like a better and easier solution.. at least for me!

Again thanks everyone I will provide an update

Apart from XAMPP try Denwer, it's way more lightweight.

You don't need to build a fake portfolio.

You don't need a portfolio at all.

Talk in terms of the problems you're solving for your target market. Use the words they use. I've sold many, many things including websites without ever providing samples. Samples would get in the way. What if this prospect doesn't like blue? What if they don't like the copy? What if they don't like the theme?

What I do for someone else has zero bearing on what I do for this prospect.

Talk in terms of their problems. You will gain instant credibility (which is the thing you feel you lack) and they won't ask for samples.

Very interesting POV. But exactly, as you say.. what if they don't like it. Wouldn't that cause more problems down the line, such as redesign and wanting more things from you?

Building a fake portfolio doesn't sound to me like a good starting point for running a business. What will you do if someone asks to see the site(s) you are showing them?

Instead of a fake portfolio, build a portfolio of suggested designs. I sometimes do that on test sub-domains. Be honest to your first few clients. Offer a discount as you are a start up and ask them to pick from your pre-built suggested designs.
